I have to say before seeing Bob Monkhouse at Bailey's in the seventies I didn't like him very much. But after the performance he put on, never stopped for 2 hours he went up In my estimation as a performer, very professional even though rather near the bone in the day.

I was there that night he was very professional telling jokes, nothing like the club comics doing the rounds on Tv at the time, like you he came across as smarmy before I saw home but he was hilarious.

I recall him doing an outdoor game show for Tv at East Park lido not long after it opened can't remember what it as called though.
