Just downing? Id of taken Richards over Johnson, Peter Crouch over Andy Carroll and Sturridge over Jermain Defoe!

You can tell Hodgson used to manage liverpool! <doh>

theres a lot more picked in that squad that i would argue about, but when i saw downings name i nearly choked on me cuppa, i do agree with you on how glen johnson get a place

I would bring Jagielka, Richards and Holt in for Barry, Welbeck and Downing.

Other than that there isn't much available, Adam Johnson has ruined his chances by being a greedy prick not bothered about starting games.

I didnt think downing would get in at all either.. He is god awful! I was against him going to the last one but every England manager seems to have a raging semi over that over rated woman beater... Plus he looks like a down syndrome version of Edward Norton.

Its quite funny seeing the contrast in attitude between alot of the Liverpool fans regarding Hodgson though... From massive hate to genius...

I am at a loss as to how Downing gets into the England squad. His season has been crap and he doesn't do a lot for England either. Looks like Roy thinks Liverpool are a super team seeing the number of players he's picked from them.

No assists no goals and Downing get's into England squad <doh>
Richards who can play RB and CB doesnt sorry Roy got it wrong already.

I've actually always thought Downing was a decent player. Certainly in his Villa and Boro days, when none other than Sir Alex was looking. But quite how he makes an England squad after a season like that is beyond me.

He may have got more game time than Adam Johnson (who lets face it has also struggled this year but been afforded less opportunity), but Downing is unlikely to start so surely if you're looking for a sub, there is no better than Johnson (given its all he's known)? Strange decision. I know he has based it on Downing playing a role in qualification but for a winger to have no assists in a season is just poor. Goals are not as much of an issue but even in a poor season you'd expect a minimum of 5 assists. I'd have taken Johnson though it would go against what many call for, players in form and playing regularly. I just think he's the type who would turn it on on a tournament stage.

All this picking players who are in form and playing regularly is a bit of a red herring for me. The key thing with any squad is to have a balanced squad which provides a manager options. Some players are just better suited to this kind of tournament football. Obviously you need the bulk in form and fit but I think there is always room for players like Johnson who have that flair to change big games.

Personally I can see why Mankini, Capello and Hodgson have slight issues with Richards. He is not as good technically as the likes of Walker and Johnson. And although he has improved he is still caught out at times, hence Mankini's preference for Zabeleta. Johnson to be fair is one of the few to have a good season at Liverpool and looks to have improved defensively. Once Walker was out I thought he'd take Richards. But being truthful I can see that Rooney's absence forced Hodgsons hand a little in that he wanted an extra forward and wasn't willing to sacrfice a midfielder. This meant going one light in the defensive areas (which can be seen as positive thinking), Phil Jones versatility the answer to his prayers.

For me Jones has to go because he is the future of Englands defence, like Wiltshire is the future of their midfield.
