It's a no from me.

Just underwhelmed by the thought.

He's just not the sort of signing I was hoping for this summer.

who though? I see people saying "7m is a lot" and I agree to a point but how many premier league experienced players can you get for 7m these days?
I don't get it. You're saying "he could have a great season" despite the facts - yeah he could, so could Fletch, so should we give him a payrise? Weird logic imo...

I've never rated the lad but the stats Funk has just posted up show him to be even worse than I thought. This would be terrible, terrible business imo. Why spunk £7m on someone who has been ****e for 3 and a half years out of the last 4, and is more than likely past his best? Yeah, he could come good, but I'd rather we take a risk on someone who has done consistently well for the last 2 or 3 years (even if in a slightly lesser league) rather than consistently crap with a 4 month purple patch.

Premier League experience isn't a necessity though. Look at Cabaye, Sigurdsson, Michu, Tadic, Sakho, etc etc. All players who have come in to teams around our level in the last few years and excelled. I don't know who we could get in, but that's not my job. We are paying a team of scouts hundreds of thousands of pounds a year purely to find these players - and the best they can do is a 30-year-old plodder from West Ham? It's a joke mate.

Top post fella.

Cabaye cost the mags 4m. That's where the values at. I don't pretend to be @Gustavo's Gonads with the continental football he watches but even I can see the value is with hungry young players from the continent who can bring, youth quality and a sell on fee. I know my knowledge is redistricted to our domestic league but to pretend there's nothing out their and settling for **** is ludicrous imo. Why pay over the odds for homegrown players when the FA's own homegrown policies have made it an over inflated market?

Whatever you think about Downing I'll say this.

Is he better than Wickham at left wing? Totally.
If he signs a 3 or 4 year deal, plays 150 odd games and scores 1 in 5 games for £7m is it a good deal? Totally
Is he a signing we can realistically bring to the club, as opposed to son pie in the sky target we can't afford or attract? Totally
Will he need time to settle into the area? No
Will he improved us? Totally

Then in my eyes he's a very good signing and should be afforded as cracking welcome if he does not moaned about before he kicks a ball.

That's my tenpenneth anyhow.

Money down the drain imo cest, not remotely better than what we have. Stats are subjective but given our predicament he has fallen short season upon season.

His stats are 1 in 10 career.

I've looked into it fella. I know. We've got players beating that especially recently, this lad can't live on his early career performances forever, well, only if we let him, he's been ****e for years. I don't see the sense in signing a winger who's lost his pace already when we have players who beat him already. We need pace, energy, excitement, hunger and fresh raw tallent, not a JoS mark II in midfield. If we want experience in the middle I certainly look elsewhere, for the wing I look at players like Bruma who wipe the floor in ability and has time on his side. Our transfer policy costs us, The mag's makes them money. Carrying on the same way will only keep us in the **** imo.

Yes and they got very lucky with him - look at the majority of the dross they've brought over for the same (or more) money more recently? It's the fact that he's proven at PL level which will, no doubt, mean there's an extra few million on his tag! I'm not saying I want Downing for £7m mind Bri - I simply know that football clubs appear to see value in players with that "I've played in the premier league" badge on their shirt! I know nothing at all about the foreign market though!

I'll guess your in the no camp then? Which is fine but you should also be realistic who you think will sign for us. BTW I meant 1\10 which is roughly his record not1\5 so apologies for the slip.

As for Downing, hes played nearly 200 games in the last 7 years for established premiership clubs and has a wealth if experience, recently winning back a place in the national team. Hes a step above anything wide we currently have as Wickham got his goalks playing through the middle not out wide and Giacherinni isn't and never will be a winger mate. Hes a classic number 10 IMO.

Downing would be a very, very good fit for us, even at £7m. Hes only 30 and at the top of his game after a cracking season last year. He wants to return north for his last hurrah and I'd welcome him.

I am indeed - does it show? :emoticon-0102-bigsm

True that some of Wicham's goals came playing through the middle, but I think I'm right in saying all but 1 of Downing's last season were when he was playing just behind the front man so it's a relevant comparison imo - Wickham gets pelters for his goal return so why would we want to sign someone who stats indicate would score even less?

As for Giacch, I think he does decently out wide. I always think back to that game against Man City at the end of the 2013/14 season when twice he broke down the left with a bit of pace and put in a lovely cross for Connor to get on the end of.

Clearly we're not going to agree on this one but I just don't see how you can say he's at the top of his game after his performances since Christmas...

It not just Cabaye they profited from. They profited on Debuchy, Best(I know), Bassong, N'Zogbia, Milner, Enrique and Given as well as at least getting their money back or making a small profit on most the players they move on. Then on top of that they've got players like Sissoko(2m) Gouffran(2m) Haidara (2.5) who regardless of their ability they'll all turn a profit. They've done this by targeting players before they reach their prime not as they're in it or leaving it. Fact is Newcastle have a much better transfer policy then we do imo. It doesn't make money on every player but no club does. It's just lucky for us their owner is a ****er
