You don't want a very small dog with children as smaller dogs are more likely to show aggression to them, as they can't always tolerate how some children handle them.
You are better off going for at least a small to medium sized dog as they are more robust to rough play and are less likely to react.
I have 2 dogs currently, 1 is a Beagle and the other is a Doberman. Both are very good with children, but I think a Beagle would be the perfect dog for you and your family, as you don't want one to big.
I've had my Beagle 4 years, and he's the best dog I've ever had. He's incredibly loyal, and very very friendly, plus they have no aggression in them whatsoever, my son used to jump all over my dog, and pull his ears and I've never known him to show any aggression to him or anyone else for that matter.
They do need a good walk everyday, as they are a breed with a lot of energy, and you will need to play with them a lot as a puppy, or they can get mischievous if they get bored, this is normal with most breeds though. But if you are prepared to put the effort in then you'll end up with a great dog.
I also think they are one of the best looking breeds around to, sturdy frames, great posture and big floppy ears, what's not to like about them?
