You're spot on about the ride stiffness Rob, The first Merc my wife had was a CLK320 with AMG sport suspension. Lovely looking car but the bloody thing used to bounce down the road. I couldn't stand it and she agreed after a while and ditched it.
She went back to a Beemer and wanted a 6 series. Got one, lovely car with a ride like silk, but just too big to be practical for her needs. Ditched that and went for a C Class CD250i Sport. Better ride than the CLK but still very stiff suspension to the point that it can become a nuisance on poor roads. Great torquey engine but lacks the refinement of the Beemer deisel - in fact it sounds like a bag of nails when running alongside mine.
Don't get me wrong, I'm very lucky to have the choice but I know which marque suits me - and secretly I think the wife agrees with me.
You buy a AMG the suspension is a different specification completely,a lot firmer ,buy a standard suspension very comfortable.
At present i drive a Merc GLA four wheel drive with AMG trim, it sticks to the road like glue, but i can adjust my suspension hardness on this vehicle softer or harder.

) the BMW deisel is way way superior in every respect to the Merc, and that applies to most of the petrol engines I've experience over the years.
for that!
