I still cant believe the "he had to work on a shoestring budget" and "sell to survive" myths are still believed by some. He should have been sacked long before we got rid of him. I wouldnt be suprised to see Wednesday climb the league. It wont be difficult finding someone better.
We certainly paid out some money for those we got in during his reign. We had the players to have been in the prem long before this year, 6pts clear at the top on Xmas the one time, with Chopra on fire. Wages weren't cheap for the players we had on loan either, there might not have been much money, but we seemed to spend it anyway.
he did a good job overall, but in particular he did badly in his last 2 or so years, and even i at the time, who was a jones supporter, turned on him just before he got sacked. he left us in a right mess as well, and malky did better than jones ever did in his 6 seasons to get us from 11 senior players to 6th in the league, some of his bargain signings are still serving us well in the PL now. it came as no surprise to me when he had to drop a division to get a job, i hate managers who constantly defend poor management and results with 'we need stability, dont sack the manager' if thats the case then how did jones get the sheffield job teams may be interested in jones to do a firefighting job, but no more than that, he's been found out...........
He spent loads not just on fees but on expensive loans. Including utter cr@p like Bywater , JLoyd Samuel , JET and Eddie Johnson. He even tried expensive old players Jimmy Floyd , Sinclair (who both did ok but you cant justify their wages) and the complete waste of space that was Robbie Fowler. Jones was given the financial backing. He made some good signings and got the best out of Jay Bothroyd. But he certainly didnt have a shoestring budget.
I don't forget the time we were flying and then went through 10 games without a win, I think Jones was given 2 games to turn it around, which he had a knack of doing, the next game we beat Leeds at their place, 3 or 4-0, which only showed when he bothered he could do it, but lack of concern was his downfall, and ours under him.
"I don't know why you find it necessary to highlight other poster's words though." It's called responding, Sparkey? The essence of debate? There's even a button to allow you 'reply with quote' for god's sake. I don't why you "find it necessary" to make a smart-assed comment every time I post something. Check the responses. Some actually agree with me without sniping. You should try it. Adieu.
Ok who do you blame when Jay Bothroyd gets injured minutes into a play off final and the replacement is the totally out of his depth Kelvin Etuhu who clearly brought on because hes the nearest in stature. Meanwhile Ross McCormack who should have been playing anyway remains on the bench. No plan B. And no I dont think he was a excellent manager for us. I was saying that at the time though and I was in a minority. Im dreading Taff reading this.
DJ did a good job and gave us some good days. He also gave us some dark days with his reluctance to change formation (especially when Jay was out) and utilise youngsters that were better than the old heads he was playing. On the whole, more good than bad during difficult times but it was time for him to move on.
Aussie - don't drag another thread down with your petty personal stuff. You've tried to derail decent threads before this way and got your just rewards. Responding to opposite points of view is an anathema to you, especially to me. If you don't like the way I post - tough. I hope that "adieu" at the end of your comment is serious this time. Adieu to you too.
Sparkey: "If you don't like the way I post - tough". Yet you nit-pick my post which was a decent response that others agreed with. Just because I reiterated what you'd already said. You do understand irony, right? Sauce for the goose, son. It may be your thread but "if you don't like the way i post - tough." Your next response should be "touché" but I won't be around to see it - I'll get accused or derailing again. My work is done. You have a lovely day.
I am absolutely positive MM would have got us promoted with the side DJ had in his last season. Bellamy dropped from the top of the PL to the Championship and was still a top class player. DJ will have to take a massive pay cut to get another job. I think he will have to drop to L1 at best having proven himself not capable at Sheffield Wednesday. Oh sorry I forgot it's not his fault, I should be blaming everyone else. I will add there were certainly times when he did a very good job for us, but overall it's hard to describe him as a success imo.
Aussie - I thought you said adieu on your previous post? Is that just another farewell like the past ones? It is A thread, my thread or not makes no difference, anyone could have posted exactly the same news. Why is that so important that you need to mention it? I try not to be personal on here but you make it very difficult. You must still be hurting for the way I took you apart on that thread over there yesterday. You were floundering trying to enlist support when even your mods and fellow posters thought you were just being a berk trying to get me banned - you are a confrontational poster who spits out his rusks when things don't go his own way. I'm glad to see you think your work is done over here.........but I bet it isn't.......... Now back to the thread. Anyone think DJ is in the running for anything other than a League One position? Is the Championship above his ability these days? EDIT: - oops, just saw your mention about DJ dropping to L1 Stevo - I've said the same above.
DJ wasn't successful but up to that point he was the most successful by virtue of getting us consistently in a top 6 position in the championship. It should be remembered that year on year we finished higher in the table with possibly the exception of his last season (can't recall). He is stubborn and at times we played awful football under him but equally we played some good stuff. His last season with us was a season to far. I still believe he was not allowed to buy players in his final season because the club were already looking for his replacement. As a person he may not be popular with many due to his nature and perceived bad attitude and poor commitment. I think he did his best but it wasn't good enough.
