As I understand he's just started to come good, but he wouldn't come back here regardless, and I doubt we'd have him (certainly not for £6m).
 
It seems like they were expecting him as a direct replacement for VDV- which is ridiculous really. Completely different players.
 
Daniel Levy always sees the bigger picture. Dempsey got a 3 year contract with Spurs, so the plan has to be to move him on to a desparate Liverpool in January for double the money.

That plus the money left from Modric, lets Villas-Boas buy the guy that he wants. And of course gives Demsey what he always wanted, CL football.

How would a move to Liverpool give Dempsey Champions League football?

I doubt there's anything in this. Dempsey is currently keeping Sigurdsson out of the Spurs side. If AVB had written Dempsey off, Sigurdsson would have played a lot more games at Clint's expense. I don't think he's made the impact at Spurs that some expected, but that isn't the same as playing badly.
 
I've been watching Dempsey's performances for Spurs and he's not had the impact most people expected. Some of that may be due to missing the pre-season or the fact that Jermain Defoe won't pass the ball, but his performance on Sunday against West Ham was the first time he's looked at all like himself. The story is rubbish.

Saturday he returns to play Fulham at the hallowed grounds, and I fully expect that the booing will only serve to inspire him to give a great performance against his old team.

And if he scores, I doubt he'll hold back his celebration to spare the feelings of his old fans. I'm certain there will be plenty of badge kissing; he's that kind of guy.

Doubt he'll get booed, but if he scores and celebrates with badge-kissing he'll never be a club legend in my eyes, which he is now.
 
In the event of Dempsey scoring, it won't bother me how he celebrates. I won't be happy, but that will be because the other team have scored against Fulham, same as any time we let in a goal. I've always thought that all the fuss about players who do or don't celebrate against their former clubs is a bit silly. When a player transfers, his first loyalty should be to his new team and their fans. Dempsey is a Spurs player, so if he scores for Spurs why not celebrate?

I hope he doesn't get booed, and whatever he does at the weekend won't change what he did when he was with us. He is a Fulham legend, and I don't think anything that happens from here on in should change that.
 
While I agree with everyone about his exploits when with us - I think I even posted about being critical of Roy when he wouldn't start with Demps - I'm afraid he's going to get some dreadful abuse on Saturday.

Captain, my post was an attempt at satire (although the bit about Daniel Levy may come true). By coincidence Brendan Rogers was talking to the press today on this very subject (Liverpool's attempt to sign Dempsey) and among other things said,


“Of course Liverpool want to be in for the top players and top talents and this is a club which will bring those players here. But obviously a lot of players want to be in the Champions League so if they want to come in here that is an area we want to get into in the coming years. We know we are not too far away and are very close to arriving in that zone.”

I don't hold Clint Dempsey in the same esteem that I did when he played for us, he tarnished his legend status
just like Steed Marlbranque when he refused to play and train properly when wanting to leave, to me that's not
what a professional person should do.

I suspect a certain amount of the crowd will boo him, as they feel let down on the way he departed.
I would hope if he scores that he celebrates with his team mates and doesn't make a gesture to the home crowd,
it would only show that he didn't understand by throwing his tantrum how he had upset the fans who had
supported him through his good and bad times at Fulham.
 
Is Demps a Fulham legend ? tricky one. He is certainly a player that deserves nothing less that total respect from Fulham fans. He was as committed as anyone when he was wearing the FFC shirt and helped us to some major glory days. He was instrumental in our Europa League success, but then again so was Gera and Davies alike. His last 2 seasons were brilliant and to achieve 23 goals in all competitions in his final season was quite an achievement. For me though the word ' legend ' is dished out too easily these day, Shearer is a Geordie legend, Bergkamp an Arsenal legend. If Demps had stayed and seen out his career with us then, yes, definately legendary status, but to leave in the peak of his FFC career, mmm, not a ' legendary ' thing to do, if it is possible to do !!

I hope he gets a huge reception at the cottage, he has earned that much from his time with us and that should not be disputed. I hope he does not score, but as Captain said, anyone svcoring against us is not good.

By the way, Someone mentionned Sigurdson. I still think we should be rying to get this guy. He is exactly what we need in the centre of the park, quality player with great vision for a pass. Not much chance of it happening but would be great none the less.

I'm pretty sure Dempsey will come into abuse on Sat. That's the way it is.
I've heard the Spurs lads are not too impressed with the Icelandic lad. He's got much to offer but Spurs are all about flare and that's where Dembele fits into their MF.
 
As a PR exercise to pre-empt the reception he's likely to get on Saturday, Dempsey has been speaking to the press about why he left Fulham. In fact it's not the 'other side of the story' that we were promised rather it's a platitude to the fans with a hint of a reminder of the good times. For example,

Dempsey said: "If you always felt valued and appreciated enough, I don't think you'd ever leave, but it came to a point for me where I didn't feel valued and appreciated, not by the fans, but by other situations. That's just the way things went."

On a serious note. Some of the players when they play for a club the size of Fulham get a bit disillusional and think they are God's gift. He is a good footballer who has shone at Fulham and US national team but that's it. Similar with others. He is not Berbatov class and everybody knows it. Probably the club offered him about 40-50k which is reasonable.
 
What a moron. Undervalued? Didn't Jol offer him a contract to become the highest paid player in our history? He left because he wanted to play for Liverpool after his head was turned. Sadly now he has neither Liverpool nor Champions League football. My heart bleeds.
 
Now this really pi##es me off. He will definately not be rated anywhere near Fulham legend now. Why would he come out and say this sort of thing, what exactly is the point. To say he felt unappreciated is utter nonsense, the fans loved him and he was as mentionned above offered a lucrative deal to stay. What a moron, hugely dissappointed with his remarks. I do remember a certain Mr Bullard stating he left because he felt unappreciated, look what happened to him. Get your fishing rod ready Clint, your credence as a top class player starts going downhill from now. :headbang:
