The army made me what I am. A depressive, hard working, thief (just for you FEZ) ok legal thief but what the heck.
Dean will sort his drink related ego based problem out and find that like loads of others, life after a career is hard.
Take your own life, well that's a hard one. I wanted to, that many times in a day, the only escape was via anti depressants.
Just to explain something. You go to the KC and if we win feel great. Have a good work out in the gym, feel great. Win at the lottery feel great.

One of those (pieces of advice) would be 'buckle down and get on with it in private - he can see his family, friends, his GP, counsellors, shrinks, et al; but reporters, especially red-top snipes are best kept at bay - vipers and breast comes to mind. I don't believe the comparison of PTS and piss-poor will power and self-endulgence make such good bed-fellows.
Seeing mates lose their jobs (and us!) is not such an unusual occurance and those I know get on with it, many having to find work away from their previous discipline and sometimes away from their family home. Of course leaving the home would not be such a problem if you had been shagging around for some time and been found out and tossed out of the family home. The parent death is always unfortunate, some are closer than others - were they that close?
Every day there are far worst things happening to folk than what Windass is going through. He seems to have blown the support of family, but he appears to have friends a-plenty; there is also the PFA (if still eligible) who have had support in place for a long time - the Speed suicide acted as a catalyst for promoting it further.
The difference with normal people is they have work experiance which makes it easier to find work elsewhere which produces a similar financial return, how the **** is being a footballer going to help Windass get a job ahead of other people that earns him anywhere near the level of cash he was on? I don't care how much anyone is earning, if they end up losing over 90% of their income it's going to cause serious lifestyle changes which can be difficult to adapt to. You become accustomed to what you have and having to accept having less can be difficult when you've always been the main provider for your family. The fact you were privelaged before and can still have a reasonble lifestyle doesn't make it easier psychologically.
With his father they were close until he tried to drown his sorrows and fell out with him as a result. The apparently sudden loss of his father is compounded by the guilt he feels about that breakdown and him not having chance to make things up with him. Although that is what it says in the HDM so it might be bollocks.
Your whole approach is simply daft and will feed the fire:
The BIG thing about the Dean Windass legend is that he came through the ranks of 'normal employment' - building sites and all that stuff. He was not a cossetted kid straight out of school and had a very good beginning in the real world - so all of this guff about him being disadvantaged id simply that - ****ing guff! The problem is he has never been arsed to prepare for this point of his career - except to talk big about it over a pint pot. Don't forget, that for 18years he had a very sensible and loving wife on his side; to discount her from having a positive effect is to insult her - his behaviour and mealy mouthed words also serve to insult her.
His earnings? Are you real or perhaps in councelling yourself? Why the **** should he have to earn a similar paypacket to what he earned in football? By my standards he earned a small fortune and I hope his wife has a decent chunk of that. I have known a number of footballers and they have all invested in property to edge their futures; just have people in other walks of life. Even the guy who played Les Battersby (another piss-head who blew it) had the sense to invest in a plumbing goods company.
The part I can have compassion for is his failed relationship with his Dad; whether or not he would have changed that, had his Dad lived, is something he will never truely know.
This all smacks of a man who is reckless in life and has blown his wedge, his security of family and friends and now credibility. He has developed a huge conscience surge because he ain't got a pot to piss in - if he did , , , , ,

It's obvious that Dean's father has offered him advice. I'm sure his wife would have offered him advice too. Why does he need to go to some expensive clinic? If he knows he's got it wrong why doesn't he just do what he has been advised by people he respects. It's also worth a try to go grovelling to his wife.
It seems he's lived his life in such away that this was a likely consequence. It doesn't look like he has clinical depreciation it seems more that this is what happens to people who live for the present when it's obvious that things are going to change in the future.
I've known people with depression and giving them advice can be totally pointless. You can talk about what they should do and why and they can agree but they don't have the determination to do it. If he's not receptive to advice from anybody I would suggest he leaves the country and works for some charity in a land where people don't bother about new cars, designer clothes and 15 pints of lager.
Dean will always be a legend to City fans but I don't think the club or the fans can help him now. I hope this clinic can help him but I don't have much hope.

PHil Brown basically said on LNorth earlier that Deano has always been larger than life and was sure he will get through this.

Hull City Football Club have been pressed in to comment over the terrible news srrounding legendary striker Dean Windass, after a clutch of national newspaper headlines broke the story over the weekend that the Hull born hero was suffering with depression - and was to be admitted to a clinic for treatment.
In a short statement on the official club website, Hull City Football Club announced the following:
'The club was shocked and saddened over the weekend to learn of the difficulties currently being faced by former player Dean Windass.
Dean quite rightly is regarded as a club legend here at Hull City after scoring the most famous goal in our history to fire the club into the top flight of English football for the first time back in 2008. He has been a regular at the KC Stadium this season, retaining the passion for his hometown club that made him a hero to thousands during his career on the pitch.
We are pleased that Dean has sought professional help at this difficult time and offer our support for a full and speedy recovery.
We look forward to welcoming Dean back to the KC Stadium in the near future.'

Are you a complete ****ing idiot? I didn't say he should earn the same amount, I said there was no chance he'd ever be able to. If one of us is in a well paid job and loses it we have skills we've picked up that are transferrable to similarly paid jobs elsewhere. We have the initial problem of losing our job and then see that we can get into a similar position again which helps us turn ourselves round. Windass looking knows he hasn't got a chance of doing it so he can never get back to providing for his family the way he has in the past. That compounds the initial problem of having lost the job he loves.
I've never claimed he hasn't been stupid. But if someone lacks the intelligence and/or common sense to manage their life well I can still sympathise with their position when it goes tits up and gets to them, it's not like he's set out to piss everyone off for some malicious reason. People going "oh he's earnt millions so he should just ****ing get on with it like everyone else does" aren't exactly helping things are they?
He has gone back and is trying to patch things up with his wife (HDM article again).
Following on from Gary Speed there's been a few people in sport coming out to show how widespread the problem is. I don't see why it's a problem for people that a reasonably high profile player is coming out saying he's got this problem, there'll be people out there who have been suffering privately not wanting to ask for help who now will because they'll think if even someone successful like Windass can then it's not such a weakness and doesn't make them such a failure to ask for help.
