He hasn't really has he? Firstly, RVP was free in 6 months time, so to spend £24M on him now is rather excessive. Yes he is a good player, one of the best, but this deal means Welbeck (who was just given a £75k a week contract will be given less game time. Add to this the possibility that RVP and Rooney might not work, whereas Rooney and Welbeck was doing just fine imo. Secondly, this move actually helps Liverpool. Arsenal are more a threat to them with regards to CL spots, United are at this moment too far ahead, so by taking RVP away from one of Liverpool's rivals then Fergie has actually done Liverpool a favour! Thirdly, City are well equipped up front, I think that their forward line is still more potent than United's and if they had have bought RVP then that would clearly have meant that they would have to get rid of one of their other forwards, one of the players that helped them win the PL! So basically, Fergie has done three things, he has bought a player that will disrupt the progress of Welbeck, he has given Liverpool an advantage over one of their closest rivals and he has enabled City to keep a forward line that won the league last year! Other than that, United have got a good player...
Yeah yeah yeah. United have got a decent player, no doubt about that...but what I said in my previous post stands. Welbeck, 75k a week, less game time. Liverpool, improved chances of possibly bettering Arsenal. City, a more settled squad, a squad that won the league last year. RVP and Rooney may become prolific, but there is a chance that they may not. Is it a risk, yes. Will it work, who knows? And that question mark is all there is to it at the moment. All we know at this moment in time is that Fergie has advantaged Liverpool, made City more solid and gave Arsenal £24M!
Or another way to look at it. United finished equal on points with City despite a huge list of injuries. United have now strengthed the first 11 with Kagawa + RVP, City have done nothing. Arsenal and Liverpool are nobodies. Too far behind us to even be worth mentioning.
If RVP can stay injury-free and play anywhere for you like he did for the Gooners last season, he is going to be dynamite for you! He almost single-handedly saved Arsenal's season, last season. What would really make me laugh is if he is the reason why you win the EPL title this coming season, and RVP comes an instant United legend! Oh boy! how much would that piss off the Gooners! Welbeck will get plently of game time. Its not like Fergie had no idea we might get Van Persie when they worked it out. A bit of rest might even end RVPs injury plage. For me its imortant to have 4 high quality strikers, and right now we do. Liverpool and Arsenal. I'd put my money on them being ahead of you anyway and if (big if of course) RVP is enough to win us the title that would bother Liverpool fans more than the difference between 6th/7th and 5th/6th . Will it work? They may not click perfectly but adding the top league goalscorer of last season to our squad is unlikely to do harm. Finally on the cost yes its steep but he was always going this summer. Wengers not stupid enough to let him go for nothing. It was pay that or watch him at city or in seria A.
Rafael! If he can stay fit, he can be the best RB in the league. In the 10/11 season, he was a beast for a few months til he picked up an injury. If we adopt a 4231 formation, I can see Valencia playing RB. Wouldnt surprise me if we put Evans at LB and let Valencia push foreword and essentially play with 3 in the back.
Look at it anyway you want, the fact is Welbeck will get less game time, RVP is not guaranteed to be a hit, nor is Kagawa for that matter! And City do not really need to do anything imo, their squad is better even with United's gambles! As for injuries, they happen all the time to all teams and cannot be used as an excuse. What if Rooney got injured first game, depth is what matters and City have more depth when you consider that Uniteds midfield at the moment relies partly on Scholes and Giggs who are imo past it, Cleverly who is unproven and Anderson who is injury prone. That leaves Carrick, who a lot of United fans wanted rid of two years ago! Also, City's squad will improve from winning the league, more experience and the knowledge that they are the best, United appear to me to be trying to change things to compete with them, fair enough I suppose, but change does not guarantee success, as you should know, solidity does, and that is what City have going into this season whereas United have untried players and possibly a disruptive element in their squad! As for Liverpool, as I said earlier, they cannot compete with United at the moment, but Fergie has given them a huge advantage against Arsenal, thanks!
I'm not sure Welbeck will get plenty of game time. Who knows? And of course RVP would seem to be advantageous to United. However, you now have two main strikers, what will this mean formation wise? If one drops off then that clearly means a drop off in goals scored does it not? I will be interested to see how this works out...
You sound like rather hopeful that we will drop off in form to be honest. Ignoring value for money (because I don't believe we should have been spending 24 mil on a striker) he can only improve the team, your post sounds like your desperate for him to fail but we can score plenty of goals with or without him i think. Literally cannot wait for the league to start.
