Sorry Swanee but my reply button isn't working, so this is my take on your post #43
So comparing the players in to out;
VDH + Mawson = Ash/2 (that's half an ash)
Gomis > Baston even injured a
vast improvement
Paloschi > Llorente
eventual improvement but none so far
Eder > not replaced
Ayew > not replaced an
occasional player last year. I'd prefer £22.5m in the bank to Ayew in the physio room.
Fer > Guidolins man and the reason we didn't sign Joe imo
Bartley > Mawson an improvement even if he only plays in cup games
For me I think we've missed out in midfield, strengthened in attack and made a total mess in defense.
Just to Pee people off more allegedly (what I've been told) Williams didn't want to go at all but got so wound up with the new board umming and ahhing about his move, particularly when the offer improved to £12m that he said "**** it, they wont look me in the eye and tell me either way so I'll make a decision for them, I'm going" and 'go' he jolly well did.
Llorente is a grafter, not prolific but is very effective WHEN SUPPORTED by an advancing midfield. His skill and strength is creating chances for support players while scoring a few himself. He is not getting any support at all so he might as well stand still, back to goal and bang the ball back where it came from.
Baston, imo will have to have balls of steel if he's going to meet our expectation. He is under unbearable pressure and he hasn't kicked a ball in anger yet, poor bastard is on a hiding to nothing.
Imho, I don't see this years squad as worse than last years, its just very, very different. I feel that the scales of gain will balance out and the improvements in attack will counter balance the failures in defense as each side improves. Yep, I've taken my happy pills again but I believe this will happen.
Guidolin is the key for me, will he be the counterweight or the dead weight. Will he maintain the balance for a mid-table finish or will he bring us crashing down the table towards the championship? Exciting isnt it?
I lerv these happy pills
