Fears Hull’s Dead Bod graffiti ‘may end up in wrong place’

FAMILY and friends of the man who painted Dead Bod fear the unique artwork could end up in the wrong place.

The graffiti was daubed on the side of a dockside shed overlooking the Humber in the early 1960s by late tug skipper Len Rood.

It became the focus of an unlikely preservation campaign last year when plans were confirmed to demolish the shed on Alexandra Dock for the new Siemens offshore wind turbine complex.

Officials from ABP, which owns the dock, subsequently agreed to save Dead Bod and set up an informal committee to agree a potential relocation plan.

But Mr Rood's daughter Jenny Wilson Rood, and former colleague Tom Jessop, say their membership of the committee has been a waste of time because ABP is keen on a site they believe is wrong.

Mrs Wilson Rood said: "Since it all took off last year, there have only been two meetings of the committee.

"It now seems ABP is set on having Dead Bod at the far southeast corner of the dock, which might as well be at the end of the earth because it's so far away from anywhere.

"It's a good seven-minute walk from Hedon Road to get to where they want to put it. The only other viewing point would be a car park on King George Dock."

Mr Jessop said their preferred location was at the western end of Alexandra Dock, close to the Victoria Dock promenade.

Mr Jessop said: "We think Dead Bod belongs to the mariners of Hull and the people of the city.

"Our preferred location would give people the chance to see it from as far away as The Deep on a good day.

"It's also a lot closer to the original spot where Len painted it all those years ago."

He said concerns raised by Hull City Council and ABP over the potential impact of the western site on a proposed bird-roosting station had been cited as a reason for opting for the eastern site.

An ABP spokesman said: "ABP and Hull City Council have identified a site from where Dead Bod will be accessible to the general public and visible to mariners using the estuary and, importantly, from where we can carry out erection of the piece and any future maintenance works safely. Discussions are ongoing and remain positive."

Bod has life of its own

Painted on the side of dockside shed, Dead Bod is currently in storage awaiting a new home.

It actually covers a number of corrugated metal panels.

The plan is to rebuild the panels and illuminate the unlikely artwork, which has inspired tribute T-shirts, posters and even a craft beer.
