We've just spoken to the Darlington Football Club administrator: 'I don't think the club will exist by the weekend'...

Heartbreaking for the team, fans et al. Here's hoping something rises from the ashes.

Agreed, I hate to see any club fold. Didn't Chester City fold for the want of 100k or something?

Mickey Owen's home town.

Maybe Newcastle and Sunderland boards could put their heads together and finance a rescue and jointly use the club as a feeder ?
What is the state of their finances anyway - how much in the red are they ?

FA banned feeders years ago, and you know they'd never do that! Best bet is a local wealthy bloke taking over.

To think, that for the sake of one weeks wage from one of the top premier league players a long heritage could be saved. Come one all you N.E Pro's dig deep and help out. One day in the future it could be you being thrown out of a job.

I don't think they are that far in the red, as id the Darlington Football Trust raised £50k the council were going to match it, I'm guessing it would have saved them. The problem in the long term (as it has been since it opened) is the stadium. It costs too much for them to run it, I remember going to a match of theirs last year and the stewards nearly outnumbered the fans. Sad really.

terrible news for everyone connected to darlo, and for football in general, maybe the stadium has been more of a hinderence to them, in hindsight they should have stayed at fleethams, really hope something can be done at the last minute

It was sad when Gateshead were relegated from the old 3rd division North. None of the other local clubs offered any help. Pity as they'd done quite well up to the last season in the division.
