Guthrie's contract runs out in the summer and I was just wondering if anyone knows if he is likely to sign a new deal? If not surely we would be looking to cash in this window so we don't lose him for free? I'm just a bit confused as to why there has been no talk of either him leaving or him signing a new contract.

In my opinion we should definetely try to keep Guthrie, he's the most underrated player at the club. He can pass, shoot, tackle, and is still fairly young. The only problem I can see is that he is maybe too injury prone, as (this might be a bit controversial) he has outshone Cabaye when the two have plyed together this season. Also, who exactly could we sign for the same amount that we sell Guthrie for that is a better player?

I'd expect him too, but I think that we would have said this time last year that Enrique and Barton would re-sign. Also would never imagined that Nolan would be playing for West Ham in the Championship.

NEWCASTLE have delayed contract talks with Danny Guthrie.

And Alan Pardew is warning of potentially treacherous round of negotiations with the midfielder, who he is desperate to tie down to a long-term contract.

Guthrie stepped into the team against QPR to good effect and was set to reprise the role against Fulham yesterday – proof that he is the ‘next cab off the rank’ in the midfield pecking order for the Toon chief.

Pardew was meant to meet with Guthrie’s agent last week but the summit didn’t happen. The United boss hopes to get round the table for talks in the next seven days.

He is clearly a big fan of a player who has excelled when handed opportunities this season but is warning him – just as he did with Danny Simpson – that he has to be aware of the benefits of staying at St James’ Park.

"I haven’t had the chat yet. But I will be," he said. "These contract negotiations are going to be difficult for him. But he’s in a good place and he needs to remember the grass isn’t always greener."

Guthrie is one of a slew of Toon players who have stepped up their game in Pardew’s first full season in charge.

Inconsistent at times during the first few years of his time at United, he is suddenly making a pressing case for his inclusion in the manager’s plans moving forward.

His contract runs out at the end of the season though and, with Aston Villa among a number of clubs monitoring him, there is no certainty that contract negotiations will run smoothly.

Pardew would certainly like him on board. Believing him to be a player who does his talking on the pitch, the United boss points to his terrific record in the team as proof he is worthy of a place in the starting XI.

"I think he’s started six games and we’ve won five. Started, that is. He can’t do any better than that, can he?" Pardew said.

"I do like him but he’s a bit of an introvert. He doesn’t say too much, he goes about his business in a quiet way. But not on the pitch – his passing is absolutely fantastic. He makes a big statement on the pitch.

"He just fits into how I play. I just think the way I play, the way I expect my central midfield player to play, he does that job really well for me."

Guthrie to me is a very average EPL player who would struggle to get into a top 10 side. Canny squad player but if anything has been learned by Newcastle is the availability of good foreign players itching for EPL wages who would outshine him.

Any new deal he would be looking for 5 years.......that's a long time for someone who's not going to improve resale wise or tbf, quality wise.

I'd argue that Guthrie has been one of our better performers this season, when he has played that is.

We're doing well atm, in fact it looks like we're the best of the rest outside the top 5, so unless some players expect to go to Liverpool, Arsenal and so on, then they may be taking a bit of a step down by moving elsewhere.

Guthrie has been our best player this season when fit? Was one of the only players to come out of the game yesterday with any credit.

I hope he stays. He has done a good job at filling in for Tiote and works well with Cabaye. Hopefully he can pull out a few more goals like yesterdays as well.

The only stumbling block I could see with him wanting to stay is whether he sees himself getting a good amount of games when Tiote returns, but that's up to him to perform and fight for his palce, it would be good to have competition between our players.

Pardew says 'he needs to know the grass isn't always greener.'

Wonder who Guthrie reckons he could sign for lol. He definetly wouldn't sign for anybody better.
