A bit of an exaggeration but do wonder about the coaching of our younger players. We need some one like Dave Merrington

So do 72 football clubs! When a club finds one that improves the club they are tempted away by bigger money from bigger clubs. We moan about our best players tempted away or going on strike to make a move away but how many of our best backroom staff have been poached? It's not a level playing field.

I don’t know why people re-write history with mane. He was decent as soon as he arrived. A bit rough around the edges. But 99% of the fans knew we had a player and were on board with him in the “give it time” bucket.

Contrast that with this guy, it’s like he’s never played football before. It’s left us in a massive pickle.

I really hope he improves

He was all over the place for the first 6 months, just like Sulemana. Showed flashes, but didn't actually contribute where it mattered.

Just gone and looked it up as intrigue got the better of me and in his first 6 months (September - February) he got five goals and two assists in the league while missing 5 games. And that doesn't include the Sunderland game where he harshly had a goal taken off him.

Obviously not at the level that he went on to reach for us but certainly can't be classed as not contributing.

Blimey, we were very generous back in those days, giving players 6 months rather than 6 games....

I was responding to the claim that he didn't contribute for 6 months which clearly isn't true.

It's far too early to make a proper long term judgement on Downs but either way I think it's a poor comparison.

Though it'd be great if we could take off like Mane did!

Yeah, I can't see it unfortunately, but let's see in time.

Give him a month in the u21s, bang in a load of goals and see what happens. He is so low on confidence that I can only see him getting worse - unless the ball hits his arse and then goes in.

Yeah a run in the u21s definitely seems the best option for now. I said similar before the Boro game I think.

If he can bang the goals in there for a while hopefully it'll give him some confidence as you allude to.

I remember Mara dropping down to the u21s for a bit. Didn't he bag 4 in a game after dropping down? Didn't do him much good for us <laugh>

Not how I remember. He had a few games where he didn’t contribute much at the start, missed a sitter. But generally he looked exciting.

Plenty of jobs where time and support doesn't happen. Don't get to cry into 10s of 1000s a week wages though so I'm sure he'll get over it.

I wouldn't go out of my way to message him abuse on social media, but the idea that if we were just a bit nicer he'd learn to jump and run is a bit nonsensical.

That’s not really the point though, is it? Being a supporter means, well, supporting your team.

But I guess we’re all fans now, not supporters, right? And ‘fan’ is short for fanatic; make of that what you will…

I’ll be surprised if he can bang in goals even at u21 level personally
