giz an example of one thats irking you and we can talk you through it.

Every single one of them <laugh> I can see why the hately ones hately, but can't put the same practice to any others. Give me an example with one you've already sussed and tell me how you break it down and I should be able to cotton on, at the minute I don't know where to start at all!

bit like cryptic crossword clues a lot of them. you often need to twist words that sound like other words or bits of the words. you need to get inside the head of whoever set the questions. bit of practice helps along with knowing a history of city players.

1. Receptacle for womens under garments
womens undergarments: possibles: pants bra knickers etc
receptacle: box container (something shorter probably better) bin sack etc

2. Plonker possibly with a Coxswain
common use of word plonker from only fools and horses used by delboy talking to rodney

3. Make intelligent remarks increasingly
hmm...
increasingly suggest more often
intelligent remarks... i suppose wit could be this, at a stretch. but lots of this kind of thing are "at a stretch" if i do crosswords i often get an answer (just from what the letters already there allow) and then have to work out why it fit the clue. same here. anyway

rather than settlement. but the suffix -ton is one of many in english that denote a settlement so
how-ton, which sounds like houghton

donkey - reference to mule ass etc
wind-ass

gandalf carried a cane or a spear or a staff, i assume.
