I'd say that's the worst 40 mins or so England have played under Stokes.

Awful. They have barely bowled even one ball at the stumps to Murphy, who showed at Headingley he can handle the short one.

Initiative just meekly surrendered. It will take a lot of getting back

Think you're going a bit OTT tbh.
It's a topsy turvy match but I'm very confident we will win this.

Yep. I probably am!

You're right, its up and down, as the others bar Old Trafford have all been.

But I've always found it frustrating to see good bowlers bowl different to tail enders. As Michael Holding used to say, and he had a mean bouncer, "bowl four balls at the stumps and the odd short one at the neck to keep them back". He clean bowled a lot of tail enders.

Game set up again owt could happen. As usual, we all think " the first hour tomorrow". Overall though, very good comeback from 115 for 3.

I don’t like the field positions either. Bowling to the tailenders with one slip and everyone else on the boundary. We did the same in the first match if I remember right. Very timid compared to the bazball batting.

Smith is a great watch, and an average score of 100 at the Oval in tests cant be bad , but how is Harmisons average even higher, cant work that out as his highest test score is given as less than 50. Mind I was never much good at arithmetic.

That’s very interesting. Maybe he’s only lost his wicket once while batting there.

A batsmans average is worked out by his total number of runs divided by how many times he has been out. He could have had loads of small scores adding up to 100+ and only been out once or never at all while batting there.

Thanks mate that rings a bell.

Spot on. He’s scored runs in a lot of innings.
Jimmy went at one point 25 innings or something not out. Had an average of 85 in those innings or something but never scored more than 15!!

Got same score in 9.5 overs than the boring Aussies got in the whole morning session yesterday. Hope they go home with the urn with their tails between their legs. Apart from a handful of sessions where we let ourselves massively down, we've bossed this ashes.

Great day for England, could have been better. Hopefully jimmy and broad can put another 20 or so on tomorrow but either way, going to take a top 10 ever run chase for Australia to win. Can't ask for much more. The fact we have 2 full days will play into our hands...the temptation for Oz will be to block everything possible tomorrow until at least lunch...that won't work.

Great days play from England, with Bairstow justifying his selection with two valuable innings.

The Aussies will be leaving a lot of deliveries tomorrow and will try to run the clock down because they only need a draw to win the series, so our bowlers need to be at it from the off tomorrow.

Just seen the news that Broad is retiring after the Ashes. A great cricketer and bowler and one hell of a competitor. He'll want to go out on a high so the Aussie top order will have to watch out!

My favourite cricketer over the last decade or so. Love how competitive he is, an absolute legend

I think he would have surpassed JAs total of test wickets if he'd carried on. I think the main thing in all this is that he's now a dad and rightfully wants to be around his family instead of touring away etc. Just my opinion.
