It’s been a long time since I watched a day of test cricket, with the worst hangover in the world that and the f1 were a blessing today, utter class

Stokes' best innings have pretty well all been when he has had a good look at the bowling, the pitch, the light. Today, he spotted a chance to get almost on terms tonight, and try and force a result. He was trying to win the game, not draw it, and there will be more of that to come.

Even as a young lad he was better when he spent time getting in. I saw him against Warwickshire once. Durham were four or five down for not many. He took at least an hour, got in, and then all hell broke loose, with windows going and supporters scattering. A big ton and Durham won.

He knows this, but he is completely unselfish and does what he can for the team. That's all that happened today, and I applaud it.

i thought about this before i posted, but surely if he went all 'maverick' on his own that is not good, no one else decided to go mental...if his captain gave him the nod then fair enough but seemed strange to try to force a high scoring game while still so far behind.

Did you see him getting the nod from himself?

Root accumulates runs so quickly. He's off the mark first ball and wasn't too far off a run a ball. Absolute magician. I didn't mind how Stokes played today. With Root at the other end he had a bit of freedom. Another half hour and we could have been almost level.

Stokes will.lead from the front in situations like this. He'll still bed himself in when the time is right I'd expect, but his natural.attacking instinct is one of the reasons he is the captain.

That is RIDICULOUS from Root
I’m glad that’s ridiculous in a good way!

Sir Alastair Cook:

There is stunned silence in the ground. Have we just seen that?

    Oh my days.

    Joe Root, stop it man.

He's just reverse scooped Tim Southee - and his second ball of the day - over the slip cordon for SIX!

    An unreal shot!
