Find out the most hated place in the UK
Monday 7 Oct 2013 4:14 pm

London has been awarded the uncertain honour of topping the list of the most hated urban centre in the UK.

Crap Towns Returns, back by ‘unpopular demand’ ten years after its first version was published, has compiled the worst 50 places to live in the country.

The capital edged ahead of Bradford and Chipping Norton to top the standings, while 2003′s ‘winner’ Hull was not even in the top 50 this time round.

Sam Jordison, co-founder and editor of Crap Towns, said Londoners had ‘no idea what’s happening in the rest of the country’.

‘They take a lot of what works in Britain, but you don’t see much sign of them putting anything back. I think that’s what lies behind the rage of a lot of the nominations,’ he told the Guardian.

‘A lot of the entries for other places are what you might call affectionate hatred, as you might tease a member of the family but know you have to put up with them. That’s not the case with London – the hatred is real.’

Crap Towns produces its list based on interviews with members of the public, taking in house prices, crime statistics, transport and what it calls unbearable snobbery.

Among the first-hand impressions included in this year’s book are ‘My friends and I once spent an evening in Thetford. Some people threw a cucumber at us’, and ‘Southampton: the only place in the UK I’ve ever seen someone get on a bus and nonchalantly spark up a crack pipe’.

Crap Towns: The top 10

1 London
2 Bradford
3 Chipping Norton
4 Southampton
5 York
6 Gibraltar (technically a British Overseas Territory and not part of the UK)
7 Coventry
8 Nuneaton
9 High Wycombe
10 Stoke-on-Trent

Surprised to see York and Southampton in there. Much worse urban ****holes than that. Belfast for one.

I was in Edinburgh in August. Meant to stay in the centre and the stag do company changed our apartments at the last minute. Very close to Hibs ground, a bar called the Loch Inn down the street.

Not a word of a lie but there isn't an area in Belfast as run down as that area.

Says the guy that has never been to Belfast.

No crack smoking on our buses <ok>

That's a kneecappin offence

If I was as sad as you I would go find the thread where I discussed with Hash all the places in Ireland I'd been to (including the ****hole that is Belfast) but thankfully I'm not an obsessive, psychotic weirdo like yerself.

Leith!!! They have done the shore area up - very nice, but the rest is a hellhole!

Like the East End of Glasgow but with the Sea near by!
