A Chinese scientist who is the one of the world's leading experts on coronaviruses was 'muzzled' after unravelling the genetic composition of the new disease, which is crucial for developing diagnostic tests and vaccines. The revelation will fuel fresh concerns over China's cover-up of the pandemic after it erupted in the city of Wuhan. Critics argue that Communist Party chiefs frustrated efforts to contain the outbreak before it exploded around the world.
At the centre of the new claims is Shi Zhengli, known as China's 'Bat Woman' after years spent on difficult virus-hunting expeditions in dank caves that have led to a series of important scientific discoveries. The virologist was called back to her highsecurity laboratory in Wuhan at the end of last year after a mysterious new respiratory condition in the city was identified as a novel coronavirus – and within three days she completed its gene sequencing.
Her team's work, and several other breakthroughs in subsequent days, indicated the virus was linked to horseshoe bats found more than 1,000 miles away in Yunnan, a region of southern China. Their findings showed it was similar to SARS, a respiratory disease that sparked an epidemic in 33 countries after emerging from China in 2002.

What are we doing so wrong ? Why is the UK having such a high percentage of deaths ?
Look how poorly we compare to Germany ? They have over 40,000 more cases but almost 8,000 less deaths.
Over 12.5% of UK cases have resulted in death.
2.3% has resulted in death in Germany.
Even the USA is showing 3.9%.

According to the New Scientist, the big question is how many infected people with mild or no symptoms are being missed. If lots are, the infection fatality rate will be much lower than the case fatality rate. We know that the UK is testing only severely ill people and missing lots of mild cases, but South Korea and Germany have been testing more widely.

Codenamed Exercise Cygnus, the wide-ranging exercise took place in October 2016, but its conclusions have never been made public, even though it highlighted shortages of intensive care beds, vital equipment and even mortuary space.

The Government most certainly was not prepared for this pandemic (there again not many were).
What I find disgraceful is Ashworth. That guy couldn’t manage a hot dinner - when challenged on anything substantive, he is like a rabbit in the headlights, but give him the opportunity to criticise and he comes into his own ...
I really don't want to make this a political because as you say not many countries were prepared but the reaction from them was seems to have been better , we still have numb nuts wandering around and still the police just ask them politely to move on , I'm not suggesting we become a police state but a water cannon sometimes gets the message across better than an "excuse me sir "

Our health service was not prepared after 10 years of underfunding by consecutive Tory mismanagement, they couldn't even provide the proper protective masks and clothing, for front line NHS staff, utter disgrace, but the British sheep will suck it all up, just like they have the disgraceful attacks over the same period on the sick and disabled..............

The health board area, which includes Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Monmouthshire, Newport and Torfaen, has the highest number of confirmed cases in Wales - currently standing at 1,453 - and one of the worst in the UK.
