Right, thought I’d start a thread to get peoples opinion about the Covid - 19 outbreak.

    Are you worried?

I’m not worried, with my wife working in Intensive Care in the NHS and when she comes home and tells me this is no worse than flu, and the doctors say the same then why worry over it. Now I know some will, but each to their own.

I feel, the media has a massive part to play in the current hysteria enveloping the country. It also doesn't help when so called overpaid sports stars chip in on topics they know sweet f all about.

Take yesterday’s media news being spouted by the BBC, with the experts letter about the governments stance on a situation that’s changing by the hour. This letter by experts that are phD students in mathematics. Give me strength.

    So what’s people opinions?

Nev, I am no medical expert but I would say it is different from flu in two respects. Firstly how easily it seems to spread and the severe impact it has on those suffering from that well worn phrase ‘underlying medical conditions’.
I totally agree re people in the spotlight seem to have become medical experts overnight e.g Farage and Piers Morgan! Also the panic buying has certainly been accentuated by media hype. I think the message should be just don’t be stupid in what you do and how you go about your daily life and keep those personal hygiene levels up and don’t panic.

There is an urgent need for people to stop overbuying products from the shops. Why so many toilet rolls are needed by a family unless they have specific health needs Rice and pasta and now baby milk....sad.....

If I didn’t know better, I’d swear that my wife had this in January.

She was hospitalised for 4 days with these symptoms .....

We’d been to London the previous weekend .....

Aren’t there reports that the Chinese suppressed the virus last December ...... ?

I’m not worried so much about the virus more so the affect we’re seeing regarding the society reaction to it . These are just the first few days of something which is going to have an impact on us for a few weeks if not months (in one form or another ) . I totally agree about comments regarding the media's actions ,causing distress and alarm with predictions on loss of life ,prediction graphs etc etc. Human nature has a knack of getting used to bad news but some of the stuff spouted lately in another time would have got you a prison sentence .
How sad that society is so driven by greed at the cost of those vulnerable in society will continue to get the least. I wonder how many people are still donating to food banks for example. How the cost of simple every day items now have a 100% or more mark up on them. baby food in short supply. Whatever your politics this isn't the time for point scoring as so often happens and has happened with ill informed comments and opinions being allowed to be aired to the country during most news reports.
I'd like to think common decency will prevail and I'm positive it will but as we've all witnessed the me me society has shown just what it's capable of it may take a while until that happens .
    Stay safe and consider others

There are reports of China having this back in December but put down at seasonal flu.

When we had the swine flu outbreak, I’m sure I had it, it poleaxed me for a week.

As a result of not knowing, my wife is sh*te scared in case she catches it - she was very ill, so much so they asked if she’d expressed any wishes re resuscitation.....

Myself and many others in my family along with friends pre christmas suffered with very similar symptoms , myself a cough which lasted 2 months with 4 courses of antibiotics which failed to clear it. I felt really ill at times but was told "its going around" , the strange thing for me I must have visited the doctors 5 or 6 times and each time was told it was a virus but the surgery was happy to give out the antibiotics even though they're no use in treating a virus.
I know there's similar tales doing the rounds stories at the moment, perhaps it was precursor of whats happening now ?

Very much sounds like that’s what she had.

I know my wife will be going into Southampton ITU tomorrow and potentially be exposed to it. But she will go into work as planned on try and make a difference.

They have had an action plan for over a week now, she has been given all her protective PPE in readiness.

Also reports it escaped from lab there in Nov, they silenced media and critics suddenly died , strange that ?
By time they were found out millions had travelled globally and here we are now !
Also reported a huge amount of medicines needed are produced there because of cheap labour etc ?
Italy sold out thier industry in the north to China who flew in thier labour in large numbers and so is a hotbed for European infection now.
This thing is here for a while and the lack of trust by the masses in anything the government's and media say is causing confusion and fear, if this thing mutates and the line that only the old and I'll are at risk suddenly starts killing all ages then anger and worst could kick off !
Hope for the best prepare for the worst is a tricky one this time !
But on a happy note I saw toilet paper for sale in B&Q <cheers>

and as shown throughout the ages neither does pure socialism, China has only come out of the dark ages ( in some respects) because it has a capitalist ideal . Russia failed Cuba , Vietnam Cambodia N Korea are they good examples how power to the people has worked for the people ?

Ahhh... where to start with this ****show?

Firstly I'll say please give my best wishes to your wife Taff, I can totally understand her fear. That's a horrible thing to have to hear a loved one say to you.

Your wife would know this Nev but I'm guessing it's only killing so many people and as virulent as it is because it's a new virus? It's as if the flu has appeared for the first time. The flu can still kill people but because so many have built up immunity and get flu jabs it's not so serious. She can correct me if wrong but that's my impression. It may technically be another form of flu (and there are existing Coronaviruses already) but it is killing lots of people so there is a definite, real worry for many!

I have a severely disabled daughter and she is being kept home from all services, starting this week. It's simply not worth the risk. Social Services will be rubbing their hands with the money they'll save but some organisations may go under. The big impact of all this will be retailers going bust. I heard of some Chinese takeaways already closed down.

As for the amount of selfish scum showing their true colours, well it sickens me as it does every decent person. I personally know of elderly struggling to get shopping due to shortages. We're trying to help there.

I’m told that Southampton has 25 high dependency beds but have converted theatres in readiness and so now have around 150.

I have 'underlying health issues' and I'm at the tail end of my 40's.
I more concerned about the financial impact of this rather than the illness itself actually.
All my work has gone - every event or gig I was booked on has cancelled.
Also on Radio 4 this morning there was talk of cancer patients self isolating for 12 weeks........
No money coming in for months is a serious possibility.

I've postponed and had postponed a few jobs so far as some of my customers are elderly and have various ailments .
But luckily i had contingency plans in place to cover myself for a while.
This government need to switch thier game completely to ensuring the population are protected from debt and all the downsides created by this virus panic also to protect businesses and employees until this passes by hibernating them rather than letting them fold and lose jobs , e.g., that cnut Branson and the like paying staff basics while his planes are earning him less atm instead of demanding our money to keep his billionaire lifestyle afloat !
Most of all great decisive leadership is required now ! And divisive twats that are using this episode to point score or profiteer should be dealt with harshly !
