My best wishes for all your loved ones in care homes (and everywhere else for that matter). As if the elderly didn't have enough struggles before this :(

The care home deaths don’t enter the figures for few days after death, due to Doctors having to sign a death certificates etc. Think they are about 2/3 days behind, before they enter the daily figures.

Its pretty ****ty time for the wife , her mum who's 92 is profoundly deaf and can only communicate via signing or lip reading so she's not only isolated physically but mentally as well so f88k knows what she's thinking , we can only communicate via facetime and that's only if there's staff member available to assist (skeleton staff in attendance ) and the thought that the last time she saw her may have been the last is upsetting for her to say the least .

It's a ****ty time all round so stay safe everyone. But those in homes are the most vulnerable and the ones who need some communication the most. I saw on facebook last week that a home in Penylan had asked people to send in emails and pictures or whatever to read to the staff. I thought it was a good idea, myself. And it's simple enough to send a mail and it apparently gives a real lift to the residents.

    I know mate.

I do worry about a lot of people’s mental state with all this going on. They have now drafted a physiologist into Southampton’s ITU so anybody can see them straight after a shift.

I feel that this virus will claim more lives but not from the virus, there is a nurse that works with the wife and she’s serving Army and has done several tours and she has compared the unit as a war zone unit, less the blood.

One of our staff went down with it in a big way, she’s currently getting over the illness but she said to me, she was hours away from being hospitalised with poor breathing.

I hope your wife gets some good news, thoughts and prayers from us all.

Cheers Nev its not unexpected that she'll pass, its the thought that she may not have her daughters around her when she does .I'm guessing everyone has been affected by this and my thoughts are with those worst off having lost sons daughters mothers and fathers too soon. Thanks

So sorry to hear about your wife's mother Matt. You are right it is awful that people are losing loved ones and not being allowed to be with them at that time.

I felt awful last week when I couldn't be at my Uncle's funeral. He was 97 and I lost my dad when I was young and so he was a bit like a dad to me.

Unbelievable - and contrary to what was said at the Government’s Briefing today:

    upload_2020-4-14_23-2-13.jpeg

I saw the claim on Facebook and thought it was fake news, so went onto the website myself...

Matt - we're in the exact same situation and reality is even when we face time the ma-in-law doesn't really know who she's talking to even though she pretends when we tell her. We're lucky as we have a great Philipino lady who is a care giver who we get to go in and see her 4 days a week and take her into the grounds - weather permitting. The bit about daughters around her - my sister in law is still in Florida - it's not really that sad for the ma-in-law - remember she doesn't really know who we are anyway and goodness knows if she has any context - it's devastating for the girls - especially my wife as her mother lived with us for 8 years before she needed more help than we or a care giver could provide. I was the only one with my father-in-law when he passed of cancer as my wife an ma-in-law had taken a well deserved trip home to check on everything - to think she won't be with her mother if she passes will really hurt ........................ hey but let's try and be positive - the old bat will probably outlive the both of us - she's always been stubborn!

My mum's 95 and in a care home in Hampshire. Fair play, they locked the whole place down very early on and there's been no visitors at all for about 6 weeks. We Skype at least once a week, so much better than a phone call. (no, she's not an IT wizard, they set it all up in front of her.) So far, they've kept Covid out of the home as far as I know...
