I'd be a bit bitter if my book caused the Ayatollah of RockaRolla Sayyid Ruhollah Musavi Khomeini peace be upon him, to call for my assassination.

I mean, have they got so little to do over there in Iran?

Those Iranians get everywhere. From what Rushdie said, he had to ask permission to go to Lidl to buy some milk.

I couldn't deal with that, I love Lidl.

From what I've read from others. Satanic Verses isn't even that bad. (Not compared to how others have depicted Islam at least)... He was just someone that the Islamic world decided to make an example out of for some reason.

I would like to think so.

Ex-presidents are far too well protected (unless they're being raided by the Feds) so George Dubya is safe.

But ex- PM's not so sure. He just needs to be in the wrong place at the right time imo.

Yeah it's my opinion and nothing more but even the sheer mention of it by me had you all defending his honour......ffs really......I seen the pack reaction with haigs death and it made my comment look like a compliment.......so please spare me the I'm the only **** with low morals whilst you said fk all previously when shoe was the other foot

Never read anyone taking the piss out of Hiag's death...all I saw were people saying what a waste it was.
People were basing their views on
A) his own words and views posted on here
B) his families interviews in the national press
C) his own videos

Your response has more holes in it than Swiss cheese.

He made specific vulgar references to a character which was clearly meant to be prophet Muhammed in his book.

Also I'm not sure what the Islamic world is but did they hold a meeting and agree this?

Reminds me of the Charlie Hebdo ****e. Of course the violence is abhorrent, but stop poking the tiger for no reason. And it really is for no reason, none, other than to inflame and rile. Then when the flames get too hot the very same ppl start crying.

It's like that bloke in the Picture thread trying to play chicken with a bull ffs <doh>

Well, in the case of Rushdie, Islamic world refers to the Islamic countries that banned his book, and the followers of the dude that issued a fatwa against him. I'm certainly not saying everyone Islamic was opposed to Rushdie or wanted such a response.

A lot of people have said a lot of very nasty things about Islam and got away with it. SR did and generated a lot of ire and death threats. He certainly got worse treatment than many of the others who have been twats against Islam over the years.

... There again to follow you running of the bulls analogy, plenty of people have teased bulls during running of the bulls and not been gored either.

It snowballed and that was primarly not because it was against Islam but it was specifically about Prophet Muhammed which is particularly taboo for muslims. He was the first to do that. The fact he was a muslim (or thought of as a muslim) and to write what he did just made the situation worse.

I'd be very surprised if any of those calling for fatwa's or being offended had any idea of what he'd written other than the fact it was against Prophet Muhammed and that was enough for them. They wouldn't have read the book (which btw is surreal and pure headfck if you try to) Add to that, what they would've heard will be second hand information and chinese whispers meaning it sounded worse, who knows?

Again, haven't read the book and have no intention to because his books are boring... But wasn't all the offensive stuff just a dream sequence anyway, and so just an offensive dream rather than targeted at Muhammad directly? I may be completely off the mark, but that was my understanding.

I've edited my post above about this. Basically, don't ask me as I read it and couldn't make it past the first few pages because it was just too surreal for me lol.

I think you're right about the dream sequence but it was defo about Muhammed.

I've banged on before about this but it's in the news so I'm going to highlight it again. The biggest impact on survival rates for cancer is 1) early diagnosis and 2) how soon the treatment starts.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-62483323.amp

The only way the pandemic has affected people with cancer (with zero reference to anyone on here) is the delay and cancelled appointments for diagnosis and treatment. Having said that, we were bottom of the table in terms of cancer treatment before the pandemic but now for a number of reasons, it's becoming a disaster.

1 in 2 ppl will get cancer at some point in their lives. When I was a kid it was 1 in 4. Something has to be done to address the need for early enough diagnosis and quicker treatment as it's not just a case of "it always happens to someone else". Not on that ratio. This thing is all too close to all of us.
Surely we should be putting far more effort into finding the reason for this? prevention is always better than cure.
100% increase has to have some cause/reason.

I don't condone what's happened but Salman's been done for being a dumb ****, little else.

He knew exactly what he was doing and what would happen but he made the choice.

Because he wanted to be controversial and sell books. Then spent decades crying about it.
Yep, best to keep your mouth shut. Freedom of speech/opinion is dead (or at least the speaker has a chance of being) :emoticon-0105-wink:
