Yeah, I acknowledge the size of the population but they took action immediately. No denial or dithering.

As did Denmark.

They didn't **** about. Relaxing their own lockdown shortly, apparently.

A lot closer to 'the problem than NZ was at the time. Be interesting to see how their approach has worked.

Was he told to isolate himself for 14 days when he got here?

Sweden hasn't locked down at all has it? Unless theyve changed tack in the last 24 hours.

Nope and Sweden was not in lockdown and I believe still are not, from a TV news item I saw yesterday. He could more or less go anywhere he wanted bar a few minor restrictions. He was lucky he received a call while in Sweden telling him to work from home once he got back, hence it was a self isolation of his own doing rather than being told to by authorities directly. Also he made a point in the two of us not coming into contact with each other either, once he returned.

This really does make for grim reading.

We're 5th in deaths worldwide. But look at the gap in the number of dead between the Top 5 and the ones that follow...

The 6th (Iran) is less than half our amount.

Anyone who thinks we shouldn't be questioning the government or holding them to account on the way they're handling this really need to wake up tbh.

No, and the deaths / infections per capita in Sweden are the worst in Europe.

I hear all the stuff about hindsight, but plenty of us were calling Cheltenham and the RS welcoming 3,000 Atletico fans who stayed and partied in Liverpool, when Madrid was already badly affected, as absolutely bonkers.

We locked down at least a week too late, and there’s literally people dying today, as a direct result of that inaction, as the exponential growth in that week or so, will have been huge.

The government have taken advice from scientists and leading medical experts. So maybe it’s them we should hold to account?

I don’t believe one single country will have accurate figures of the true scale of the virus. China’s numbers are laughable.

Not sure Iran’s figures are accurate.

Experts advise, but the government take responsibility at the end of the day. After all that's the first priority of any government is to keep its citizens safe. And I'd hate for anyone in the medical profession to become the scapegoats.

China's included in the Top 5, I'd happily include Iran as well if they're lying. But even then that makes a Top 6 we're a part of and a big gulf to the rest. Why are we in there?

Russia have not had many cases/deaths. Huge spike in pneumonia deaths over there, though <whistle>

That's fine but not really the point. Include them and make it a Top 6 then. But it's a Top 6 we should not be a part of. Especially when you look at the gulf between that group and the rest.

I don’t think Cummings is a medical expert. His focus was on saving the economy, same as Trump. Fortunately our government have woken up. The US are still a bit ****ed as their leader wants the Dow to be flying in November.

I agree. We’re in the top 6 as the virus was allowed to spread unnecessarily. That’s pretty much undeniable.

I don’t want anybody to become a scapegoat is the point I’ll be arguing. This is unprecedented and obviously when all this is finished we’ll look back and see glaring errors that were made. I don’t think now is the time to be pointing fingers, though, which probably won’t be a popular opinion on here.

Our Prime Minister has lead from the front in this and in doing so it has nearly cost him his life. He’s been upfront when he needed to be and talked about the reasons why he was holding back on the lockdown because of his concerns around people’s physical and mental health. He give people a chance to adhere to the rules, nobody listened so he then enforced the lockdown.

It’s looking obvious that it’s come to late and that’s something the government and future governments will have to learn from and deal better with if it or something similar comes around again. Giving his reasons for holding back on the lockdown and also taking into consideration that he was also being giving advice by the chief medical officer, I’ll choose to not point any fingers on this one.

You know in that moment you put something in perspective and wonder wtf! I've looked at those figures and thought, we're increasing at nigh on 1000 deaths a day and there are countries there in the fcking developing world who haven't got a 1000 total... fck it even 2000. I feel like I/we have sleepwalked into accepting that mortality rate and it's just a stat now.

I think it's a case of competence rather than finger-pointing tbh. This is a constantly changing/evolving situation. As such, accountability is a central part of governance. Whoever the government is btw.

We’ve been conditioned to think this was all part of the plan and it’s going as expected. There’s a genuine tone of triumph in some media outlets but the polls suggest I’m in a minority for feeling the way I do about it.

Considering the herd immunity option was really ****ing stupid given we had months to consider the sanity of it. Lazy leadership. Ignore the issue and hope it magically goes away.
