Wouldn't you say that relaxing restrictions over Christmas is likely to increase cases?
Sadly it's not just Ethel who has caused this increase but many other who disregarded the guidelines. Those pictures of shoppers that have done the rounds are only a small part of the story. I have seen enough to know why it is spreading. I said the other day that my friends are all saying the same thing about idiots disregarding rules. You need to get off your 'lefty anti-everything Tory' horse and accept what is actually happening?
And you need to stop relying on an echo chamber of half a dozen middle-aged people in Wokingham as some sort of focus group on how helpless the hardworking tireless government is.
it doesn't matter what they say, people will still break the rules. I remember a poster on here a few weeks ago saying nothing would stop him seeing his family at Christmas. people can't even abide by guidelines now what chances are there at Christmas?
Besides if Boris had cancelled Christmas you wouldn't have given a toss about case increase you would be attacking him for cancelling it? He can't win.
Now you are moving away from the facts and what we are discussing. Government make rules and guidelines, if people don't respect them, then that is down to the individual. Plenty of people like me have sacrificed work, seeing family and more while selfish 2222's blatenty disregard simple rules. But you seem to think that is okay and it's all the governments fault, then that says a lot about your way of thinking.
Then again we are all probably flag waving Nationalists.
The problem is the rules have been set by a government that can't even get members of paliament to abide by (not just Tories), and some of the rules have been so vague that the general popluation have had enough it seems.
I've made the same sacrifices you have, and have seen countless people ignore the guidelines which really gets my goat. I have vulnerable members of my family, both up here and back down in England, who are terrified of catching Covid as it will surely deal a fatal blow, especially my father - luckily he is in a low case area but hasn't left the house in months. Selfish ****s going about shops, packed together like sardines, is a horror show, and then we tell them they are free to travel all over the country and mix with larger number of people - there's no "likely" about it, there will be a large increase in cases in January. Wales and NI have already announced pre-emptive lockdowns straight after Christmas, and all the talk is that they expect Scotland to do the same - sensible IMO, and I hope England follows suit.

Because my eye op has been postponed yet again
And unlikely to be done in January either apparently
Probably serves me right for trying to save £2500 back in September by opting for NHS treatment rather than going private

The NHS performed 4.4 million fewer potentially life-saving scans between April and September after being told in March to cancel all non-essential appointments. I feel lucky to have had my bowel cancer screening when I did, even if it was 3 months later than normal.
I totally agree SM the government has made cock ups along the way. Personally I would have closed the boards early on and stopped those daily flights from US/China/Europe. Even my mate flew in last week and walked straight through customs without any checks or anything? You can't do that in Australia... maybe that's why all shops and pubs are open?
It's a joke. The strain flying around at the moment (not the newest one, but from the summer) has been tested and proven to have come from overseas, and is responsible for a large percentage (80%) of infections in Scotland and Wales...

You probably haven't seen the story of this arsehole, who travelled from Scotland to Isle of Man on a jetski to see his girlfriend....they've closed off their borders and are effectively Covid-free. He's been jailed...

My left eye is gradually losing sight - strangely not an issue for driving but I am finding that my 12 hours a day laptop work is making me much more tired than normal. One of the reasons I'm office based again is that face-to-face meetings mean fewer Teams meetings and therefore less screen time
The NHS needs to find a way through this. Not for me specifically but for the many people like Stroller for whom delays could be significantly more serious
An effective closure of much of the NHS until - quite possibly - June next year is wholly unacceptable
I've now had 2 pointless Covid tests (ie because ops were then cancelled) - I have to travel to the Hospital, a dedicated nurse has to do the test and then it has to be processed. And then the appointments clerk has to waste her day phoning round to cancel all the surgical appointments. A crass waste of already limited resources
Mate this is where we will Agree 100%. Makes me angry that mine and many lives have been put on hold while some @@@@‘s only think about themselves.

Good luck Stortford! You already paid for it in your NHi contributions I imagine. Also while I dont know your exact problem of course, I wouldn't have thought eye specialists would be too involved with Covid, or maybe many medical staff are sick or hospital space is a problem. It was a long long time ago but I do remember Moorfields eye hospital giving good assistance (not an OP.) on the NHS. Have you been there, or maybe its private only now?

I had my retinal detachment repaired as an emergency at Moorfields as an NHS patient back in March. The resulting cataract needs dealing with now. It is a simple 30 min procedure but once you are in the system at a particular hospital (6 miles from me) it is almost impossible to move to another hospital without going back to the bottom of the waiting list
In the UK if you go private you don't get any form of refund or tax credit against what you have already paid in national insurance contributions. And as I'm self employed constantly taking time off for repeat appointments isn't helpful either
The NHS is brilliant is you have an emergency, but currently a disaster area if your treatment isn't for an emergency
I would have towed him out into the Irish Sea and used him for Royal Navy target practice
