and moreover that herd immunity is not a strategy to be chosen, but a naturally occurring phenomenon. And it doesn’t mean you’re a selfish **** who doesn’t care about others.

There have been 1,056,000 deaths worldwide with this virus. I am sure the families of those 1m++ people would disagree with you and Woody. Hundreds of thousands more will die in the coming months until a vaccine is found unless we have restrictions in place. How do we stop things getting totally out of hand?
I know Sturgeon is not everybody's cup of tea in England but she has controlled the virus better in Scotland than Johnston has in England.

The reason I directed the last sentence at you is because you stated in post #11,678 "I've just seen that Sturgeon has banned the sale of alcohol in bars and pubs for sixteen days from 9th October. Are they having a competition to see who can impose the most ridiculous measure?".
A lot of people have died during this outbreak, no question. During March and April there was an increase of more than 50,000 deaths, compared to the previous 4 years, according to ONS figures.
However, is it safe to conclude that all of those deaths were purely attributable to covid?
Over 20,000 of those were in care homes, where frail, elderly people were sent to spread the virus and pass away alone. Unforgivable.
Deaths were being labelled as covid19 at the mere suspicion of symptoms, as prescribed in the corona virus bill.
This is old ground, but nonetheless is worth repeating.
Death rates normalised and subsequently have dropped compared to recent years.
Questions of the PCR test are being asked, questions with serious implications.
Projections of weekly doubling figures leading to 50,000 cases a day seem to be more fear porn, resembling Fergurson’s 500,000 deaths or 2 million or whatever it really was.
We no longer talk about deaths per day, or even hospitalisations, but cases, the definition of which tells us nothing about the state of play.
Nonetheless, the fear is maintained and the absurd restrictions on peoples ability to work and to make informed decisions about their lives continues without logic or scientific reasoning, enabled by a dodgy bill pushed through parliament unquestioned and extended just around the time of Whitty and Vallance’s 50,000 non prediction.
Many highly qualified and respected scientists and doctors from all around the world are challenging the lockdown strategy.
She is THE GOVERNMENT OF SCOTLAND when it comes to healthcare. She is under no obligation to follow what Johnston does or says.

I have an 82 year old Mother with underlying health issues. How would you suggest we (as in the world) protect her health and her life without restrictions in place?
Coronavirus has been with us for way more than a decade. The COVID 19 version hasn’t.
I agree the response has been and is increasingly ridiculous, and pretty incompetent. The measures are a panic response by idiots to something they can’t control. The pub stuff is to stop people mixing - the virus goes from person to person in close proximity, pubs are prime places for this to happen. So close pubs, the Brits like pubs.
You might think that this is an affront to your human rights and an attempt to impose tyranny, and it can be interpreted that way. Personally I disagree, I just see people scared ****less by something they have no experience of, clutching at any straw to try and reduce its expected impact. I hope it works, because hospital admissions are shooting up and the death rate is steadily climbing, from a thankfully low base.
Of course, we are in a Catch 22. We don’t know whether the death rate will really rise exponentially again (if it does I’m braced for the tedious ‘did he die with or of the virus’ debate to resurface.). If it doesn’t some could claim that the measures worked, others that the measures were unnecessary. If it does, some could claim that the measures prevented a bigger spike, others that they were a useless imposition on our liberty.
All I am convinced of is that this disease has caused both direct and indirect suffering and distress. I have no glib answer or solution as to how it should be handled, other than with transparency and honesty, which is sorely lacking in some quarters at the moment. I’m prepared, sometimes with little confidence, to follow rules aimed, I still think, at reducing the suffering and distress.
What do the politicians gain by imposing ‘tyranny’ on us? Unless you believe that parliamentary democracy is also on the way out, they will suffer for it in the end.
You create a safe environment for her to live in, you shop for her, care for her, stay with her if you can. You take all precautions possible to keep her away from the virus. I would do exactly the same with my parents.
Beyond that, you activate local communities to look after vulnerable people who don’t have relatives.
Beyond that, knowing what we know now, you get on with life, as Sweden have proven reasonable, with life largely normal there now. All businesses remain open, schools remain open, no pointless restrictions enforced by idiots who take their advice from a very unbalanced source.
Perhaps we didn’t know what we were dealing with in February/March, perhaps we did.

I was in Thailand for over 6 months, 3.5 months longer than planned due to their being no flights back for much of the time, and also due to entry restrictions back into Norway. What Sturgeon is reportedly doing sounds like part of what they did in Thailand, a far more comprehensive locckdown than I've heard of in W. Europe or the Americas, and a far more gradual opening up. But there has been virtually no Covid in Thailand for months- only in state run 14 day mandatory quarantine for people returning there. What the government did has been very effective clearing the country from Covid but they have big problems now getting tourism, an important contributor to the economy there, up and running again. Understandably. it's taking a while to find safe ways of relaxing the quarantine and entry rules for tourists, when there is so much Covid in most of the countries tourists come from, China one of the very few exceptions.
Sadly mate, in the case of England, and from what Steels says Scotland, we are being denied access to,routine healthcare, and many people will die as a result, in order to ‘protect the NHS’. Waiting lists for treatment and appointments have gone through the roof, including for cancer diagnosis and treatment.

My Mother is an independent woman. I can not control where she goes and who she sees. I can not request the community to help me look after her. I have to trust the government and health authorities to do whatever is necessary to protect her and to protect as many other people as possible. They decided the best way is to impose restrictions on all of us. I haven't worked for 7 months, I am not happy with the restrictions, I want my life back, I want to travel freely but, in the interests of everybody else's health, I can't and I have to accept that.
Is Sweden a great example of where we should be aiming to be? They are close to 10,000 infections per 100,000 citizens. Mind you, their death rate is still less than the U.K. Other Scandinavian countries like Denmark, Norway and Finland would certainaly question whether Sweden has the right idea or not.
