A bowel cancer patient whose operation was cancelled due to Covid-19 has said "people will have died" from delays.

Adrian Rogers, 46, was due to have an operation in April, but after treatment delays his cancer became inoperable.

The scaffolder from Retford, Nottinghamshire, said the government could have done more to ensure beds were available for the most vulnerable.

The government said: "It is incredibly sad to hear of cases where cancer treatment has been affected."

Mr Rogers was diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer in July 2018.

"After 52 rounds of chemotherapy the cancer became operable, which was a great sign," he said.

He was taken off chemotherapy for eight weeks to allow his immune system to recover enough to survive an operation at the Manchester Royal Infirmary.

But his treatment was cancelled because he was told it was too risky for him to share an intensive care ward with Covid patients.

Due to the delay, Mr Rogers grew 20 tumours and his condition again became inoperable.

He believes not enough was done by the government to ensure beds would be available for cancer patients most at need.

He said: "People will have now died as a result of delays to treatment."

Mr Rogers is continuing chemotherapy and is set to begin using a drug called Avastin, which is not available on the NHS.

His wife Amanda has raised £27,000 through GoFundMe for the treatment.

Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust said it had continued to provide cancer care to patients except when "the risks of treatment outweigh any benefit".

A Department for Health and Social Care spokesperson said: "Cancer diagnosis and treatment has remained an absolute priority."

Cancer Research UK said 20,000 fewer treatments took place between April and July across England, a 28% drop compared with the same period in 2019.

Chief executive Michelle Mitchell said the Covid-19 pandemic has had "a devastating impact on cancer services and the lives of cancer patients".

She said there are concerns a backlog of patients is not "being cleared quickly enough".

A worker at a major NHS provider is under investigation by her employer for posting a video on social media in which she claimed that Covid-19 does not exist.

Louise Hampton, who works for Care UK, posted a video to Facebook on Wednesday in which she claimed her service had been "dead" throughout the Covid-19 pandemic and she had done nothing at all.

Brandishing her NHS badge and a certificate signed by a Care UK manager that thanked her for making a difference to patients, Ms Hampton said: "Apparently, I worked really hard during Covid."

She then went on a rant peppered with profanity and claimed that she had done no work "because our service was dead. We weren't getting the calls. It was dead. Covid is a load of ...

"And I didn't clap for the NHS. I didn't clap for myself."

In a statement, Care UK, which provides call centres and a range of other services to the NHS, said it was investigating.

"We are aware of this video, which we consider to be materially inaccurate in a number of ways, and can confirm that a member of staff is subject to investigation," a spokesperson said.

"We expect all our colleagues and services to support the work of the NHS in giving the public the right information and support during the pandemic. Our call centres were, in fact, exceptionally busy, handling a peak of 400% more calls than usual. Our teams showed huge commitment and dedication in delivering the service, and we have rightly thanked them for the efforts they have made."

The video quickly racked up nearly half a million views across Facebook and Twitter.

In a later post, Ms Hampton claimed she had received "messages of support from people including NHS workers who are speaking out".

Her Facebook account includes a number of coronavirus conspiracy theories and references to the QAnon conspiracy theory.

However, copies of the video had already proliferated across social media sites. It was particularly popular in groups and communities promoting Covid-19 misinformation.

QAnon supporters - who believe Donald Trump is secretly saving the world from a cabal of *****philes - have also spread unfounded theories about coronavirus, calling it a "deep state" hoax and promoting misinformation about face masks and vaccines.

She also made references to Plandemic, a coronavirus conspiracy theory video that went viral in May and was subsequently taken down by major social media networks.

BBC News has contacted Ms Hampton for comment.

Strolls makes a very good and fair point, Ellers. For example people were not calling for emergencies that really that should of....and if they did many were refusing conveyance to hospital because of the possibility of catching COVID..
Now of course the government can’t be blamed for that, however it’s a fact that many cancers have been missed due to cancelled appointments (my own appointment was cancelled and put back by months), this along with other ‘routine’ appointments did and will lead to needless deaths, so the NHS could be protected.
This isn’t about point scoring, it’s about working out where this all went wrong.

My theory, and it is only my personal opinion, is that most of those who would die of the virus are now dead......
Sort of agree with that Staines but I think we have moved away from the original point... which was that the government acted quickly to take France and Spain off the list and surely that has saved lives as both countries infection rate has rocketed.

Why do I feel that if the NHS hadn't been protected, and was overrun and patients were not treated and died in corridors or out in hospital car parks, you'd be heading the list of complainants...?

probably the same as "If corbyn was running the government Why do I feel that if the NHS hadn't been protected, and was overrun and patients were not treated and died in corridors or out in hospital car parks, you'd be heading the list of complainants...?"

Unfortunately we can only work with what we have got with and there is now an abundant of people dying because the National Health Service has transformed into the National Covid Service.

If Corbyn was PM we’d basically be Venezuela by now, a Syrian would be sleeping on your couch and we’d all be too busy doing the mandatory diversity training to work so it’s all moot.

It has been mainly the economic independence of most of the common people which makes them so unruly in these nations, and likely apt to opt to support the sovereignty of their own nations and local control, which is the main obstacle to their (WEF) plans and precisely why the severe economic restraints have been necessary under the guise of the pandemic. If the people do not comply, undoubtedly a second wave will come their way, and with that food shortage, and complete government domination in order to usher in all proposed changes of the Elite.

Social Distancing, Muzzles, Home Office etc. do perfectly fit into that obvious transformation of both society and financial system - the latter will follow eventually.

About the stupidity of the 90% and how to recognize it !

They would remain so, even if the truth media - as has happened several times in history - were to change course and claim the opposite tomorrow as they have done so far. 100% of the 90% would not even notice it, because they belong to the ruminant species.

Stupidity is innate, intelligence too. If you are stupid you cannot get the right information because you would not understand it anyway and if you are not, you will get the information you need anyway.
