Bob,

The scheme was well -intentioned but basically thought through and put to pen on the back of a cigarette packet. I know that because legal commentators and lobby groups have been asking questions about how the scheme was going to operate for the best part of 5 weeks during which there have been a significant number of changes and differences in guidance between the advice to employers and the advice to employees. There have been at least 4 versions published during which the goalposts have moved quite a bit - in favour of employees you'll be pleased to hear. However there have been some glaring inconsistencies. So let's hope they've learned some lessons in the process now that they are concentrating on the scheme for the self-employed.. If there are omissions and concerns get your reps to raise them. To their credit they have taken many of these on board to date.

I’m in the haulage industry mate and believe you me if it happens once it happens again and again, and it’s not an unfounded assumption, so unless you work in haulage and know different shhhhhhhhhhhhh

Yes you can "blame" the Chinese for initially trying to cover up the scale of the death rate, but we in the UK are currently doing something similar to that with limited information about care home deaths and NO information on CoVid deaths in the community. There is no blame in this, please everyone just needs to be adult and accept responsibility and tell the truth.

We, the UK population, are actually pretty well educated and astute so please......

Don't say we are going intio lockdown but leave our borders open
Don't say we are going into total lock down and then anyone who says they are essential can still go into work
Don't say you are going to say we have enough PPE, then say we are going to have some by the weekend and then say it will be here by Tuesday afternoon!
Don't say we will be testing 100,000 a day and be stalling at less than 20,000.
Don't buy huge number of antibody tests from China and then say they don't work

And please do not say in your repudiating press release following the Times article that you were working day and night getting ready for this pandemic and then admit that the PM did not attend 5 COBRA meetings.. Oh yes I have read that often other ministers chair meetings ( even if they chair, it is actually rare for a PM to miss a meeting, they are only called when there is an emergency!). To quote Wikipedia you only have COBRAs "in response to instances of national or regional crisis".

Bit of a muddled rant Beth.

Surely if you are an essential worker, you CAN go to work?
They said if you can't work from home, you're allowed to go to work whilst observing the social distancing advice as much as possible. What was someone like me to do?
Who was going to pay my bills while I'm the only one in the household who can still go to work? You?

The filthy eating habits of the Chinese is partly to blame and there is growing suspicion that the virus originated in the Wohan labs and escaped into the wet markets.
The Chinese have been trying to cover everything up from the outset.

I'd prefer it if you would stick to factual, scientific advice, as you did a while back, rather than your constant political points scoring.

No government of any colour would have faired any better with the totally useless PHE and layers of red tape within the NHS.
Not to mention the conflicting views of the scientific community.

Blame lies in a variety of places for the mistakes that have been made.

When it's all over, hopefully we will be much better prepared for the next pandemic.

I completely agree mate.
I would have preferred a universal payment to all and us self employed have been put to the back of the queue somewhat.

I'm just a bit fed up with all the constant whining.
None of this is easy.

This is unprecedented and an awful lot of mistakes have been made.

A lot of those mistakes weren't made by politicians imo.
Unless, following scientific advice is a mistake.

I actually think Beth's post was spot on.
It's not about point scoring from a political sense, it's about peoples lives. Some of the decisions made have, in my opinion, attributed to that death toll. It could be poor scientific advice from starting with herd immunity (which now gets denied despite evidence) to the lockdown. Let's be honest, we are not allowed within 2 metres of people yet the experts said that big gatherings like Cheltenham, schools, footy matches, concerts didn't really effect the spread. Now any logical brain can see that mass gatherings and staying 2 metres apart are totally opposite things. These experts need sacking pronto

No I'm beginning to agree. When I look back in chronological order of the advice given to the government, its drastically changed. Watch next, those face masks for the public that had no scientific benefit will soon be beneficial. Put money on it. £2.50 each way!

Johnson made a speech in February (someone posted it on here) where he made the case for Britain remaining open whilst the rest of the world shut down. He viewed it as an opportunity. It seems clear to me that the herd immunity approach was designed to support this and that the scientific advisors were bowing to political pressure at this time.
 
There seems to be a need to blame this pandemic on China. I believe that it certainly came from there and whether deliberately (and I am reluctant to accept this) or by natural causes (which I do believe can someone explain what will be gained by “proving” it was the fault of the Chinese

I do not for a moment believe that blaming anyone is going to end the lockdown and bring back the stock markets. If the virus fades by lockdowns, social distancing or vaccine I expect everyone will want to return trade with them immediately.

These experts on the briefings are worse than the politicians for evading questions. Just answer the ****ing thing! Or **** off and get someone who will/can
