I am too Stan. I am far more worried about the socio-economic outcome, many jobs, many economies and therefore people will be affected by this virus.


I admit the politicians have made a complete pigs ear of this.
Herd immunity was not mentioned in the first few Boris broadcast, he kept saying we are being led by the science. He did not understand it. No politician has explained what the scientific people are trying to do.

In a nutshell people are dying in the Bergamot region of Italy because they were quarantined near immediately. They have the second oldest population in the world (after Japan) and their ill prepared NHS could not cope with a small community of older people being rapid confined with a virus that predominantly affected older people. In the UK, they are trying to extend the epidemic and allow it to go through the population (build up immunity in the younger and fitter people), not confine it in one place and spread the load for longer. Allowing the NHS to be able to spread the load.

Now they are taking knee jerk reactions, closing everything. Isolating pensioners for up to 4 months. Closing care homes to visitors, and what happens when the carers get infected. Boris is losing control I am afraid

But as Stan says, the worst thing is what the world will look like when we exit the tunnel at the other end.
Many businesses gone bust, many people on the breadline. Will there then be civil unrest.

I would have thought under emergency powers the Government could requisition private hospitals rather than rent from them. I remember a number of cruise liners were requisitioned during the Falklands War, this is a far more serious situation...

The government would still have to pay compensation, presumably based on lost business by these private companies.
 
If he Chinese had admitted what was going on before the virus "exploded" then maybe the world may have been in a better position to address or put "actions" in place. However we are where we are. Pointless blaming politicians for this mess. Ex politicians and opposition can state after the virus was discovered what they would do - just playing devil's advocate.
If the Chinese doctor that sadly passed away had been listened to then maybe more could have been done. How many in China died before details were released. There are so many conspiracy theories out there - personally I think it was a chemical weapon that went wrong as there were no immediate cure's. In some way, and as bad as this sounds, I am glad that this is affecting the rich and powerful as much as Joe Public.
Having two 80 year old parents, staying in doors and self isolating it is scary but we will get through this

mot sure i follow the line of thinking. Lombardy has the one of the best public health services in Europe (unlike southern Italy)

I think it was mentioned that they have the 2nd longest life-expectancy in the world in normal conditions, obviously this virus has a bigger target there...

oh of course the chinese have messed this up. However, it's only 2 months since it's been reported in china that the UK have decided to do anything about it.

I'm going to have to hand the responsibility for UK's mess up with the UK unfortunately

I didn't mean Lombardy had a poor health service Roma. I have actually spent time there a few years ago and know it is a good and caring service but what I meant was encapsulated in the sentance

The health service was over-swapped by the enforced quarantine, meaning all those people who were paerticularly prone were kept together so could self transmit quickly, no one told them at the start to totally self isolate. No one took responsibility for so many people all needing ICU and ventilators all at the same time.
This is what the UK is trying to acheive by delay the peak and flattening it out

No disrespect to the Italian health service was meant Roma, our NHS would have folded under the situation if we had been in the vanguard of the infection

Absolutely disgraceful to score political points over this Beth.
The Government are being led by the medical experts.
This thing is incredibly difficult to manage.

They're dammed if they do and dammed if they don't!

The government know they only have one shot at quarantine because people won't put up with it indefinitely. They've given warnings of what may come but they'll time introduction to the capacity of the health services. If those services are in danger of being overwhelmed, they'll bring it in. Sounds right to me

You get weirdly defensive over anyone not cheerleading for our great leaders. They’re being led by some experts. Plenty of experts disagree. The lack of communication is dismal. Frankly it’s a shame it’s taken this long to realise we need experts at all.

BobbyD - All I keep reading is that everyone appears to have a different way of addressing this situation and those that aren't in charge can quite easily say what they would like to do. I believe (my opinion only and no proof) that this virus was probably already "live" in China before they started to admit and by then people had travelled to different parts of the world not knowingly affecting others. At present it is down to the current leaders to combat this. However I doubt very much whether anyone could have predicted the way the disease has spread throughout Europe and beyond. And just how quiet are Russia and North Korea......
