This makes it sound like he might be coming back as the older player in the u23 side rather than as a first team option. Like Ollie Lancashire was doing a few years ago. Obviously Lallana was a much better player than Lancashire so maybe he will play a bit of a role in the first team squad but doesn’t sound like it to me so far.

Not fussed by the signing really, too early to tell until we see what other moves we make. I’d say we need to be signing players to improve the first team first and foremost, we need 3/4 new starters as a minimum I would suggest, possibly more

Forget about Lallana's time with us and the way he left etc. For one moment pretend he has played elsewhere and had the journey and career he has had....I think Lallana would be a good squad option with tonnes of experience in the Premier League playing for some of the best managers, playing for England, winning the Premier League and Champions League etc.

Even at his age, he still has a lot to offer in training, with the youngsters and even with the senior pros, would be a good option off the bench and the occasional start. The games aren't as thick and fast in the Premier League.

Now add the fact that he is a Saints Legend, always gave his all, one of our own etc, local to the area, and it seems like a no brainer to me.

I fully trust Russ and if he is keen, then make it happen!

I understand why he left, I just didn’t like the way he left…..time heals, and isn’t his son in the academy? I am sure I heard that somewhere.

As a free agent it wont be gazillions, but it will be more than we think. Paying nothing and then 40k a week for 2 years is £4m and cheaper than buying a bargain basement midfielder for £5m and paying 20k a week to over 3 years

EDIT: Also at 36 and an ex-England player, a Champions League Winner and a PL winner he has earned the right to command a decent wage.

It’s not quite the same, as transfer fees and wages are assessed separately under FFP. Transfers are amortised over the length of the contract (see Chelsea) while wages are part of revenue and expenditure.

I really don't get the trepidation regarding this, its more or less a free hit and its not going to cost the club that much financially, essentially a no harm no foul move where we bring in a player with massive experience who is still capable of being a solid squad option for a year or two.

He is clearly very highly regarded and considered influentual by nearly every coach and player he has been around, which will be important if we are to avoid the rudderless attitude disaster we suffered last time in the PL.

(But I also think people overegg how bad Walcott was for us too).
