Dogs' eyesight is relatively poor at the best of times, and way behind their senses of smell and hearing.

I didn't want to get into an argument over it.Sure you do. Maybe not most people in most circumstances. But if you smell tobacco it narrows if down to smokers for example. Maybe you might occasionally recognise a fragrance used.
Most long-term couples recognise the scent of their significant others and can detect it on clothing they've worn, etc. I'm sure to a small subsconscious degree we all use it somewhat even if it isn't our most common means.
Perhaps its olfactory cells have been burnt out from the smell of dope and stale beer.
