Some years back, it was a popular belief that Jack Wilshere was destined for big things. Such perceptions deepened further when the then 19-year-old outclassed European heavyweights, Barcelona, in Arsenal’s 2-1 win over arguably the best side Pep Guardiola ever managed.
The hype and praise came along as a relatively fresh face orchestrated the North London outfit’s midfield with pace, brutality, power and appealing set of skills. There was undoubtedly something special about the lad which made him a household name across the continent. Such was the impact he had.
The glimpses of a bold attitude which the Gunners needed during the period when the financial woes were still very much in existence, coupled with the repertoire of his precise short passes, link-up plays and the confidence he showed six years ago was exemplary.
As a matter of fact, many started to perceive that the Arsenal prodigy would be the face of the English national side few years down the line. Call it the lack of luck or how injuries demeaned him, Wilshere failed to maintain the standards he had set, or to even get somewhere in the vicinity of that.
Last season, Wilshere was sent on loan to English top tier side, Bournemouth, and it must be underlined that the English international fared pretty well. But considering the plethora of stars in Arsene Wenger’s jam-packed midfield armoury and the quality therein, the 25-year-old might be overlooked.
To get into the national side for the World Cup, Wilshere must target more game time under his belt, something which would be very hard to attain if he continues to stay at the Emirates Stadium next season and thus, an exit is likely to be on the cards this summer.
