SWANS LEGENDS TURN ON THE STYLE AT CARMARTHEN
Swans Legends turn on the style at Carmarthen
MAY 31, 2018 BY SWANS INFO

Last Saturday saw a Swansea City Legends team take on Carmarthenshire Locals in a charity football match in aid of the Swans4Cancer Charity.

The event which was first played last year, took place at Richmond Park, home of Carmarthen Town and the 150 plus crowd were treated to some quality football in the blazing bank holiday sunshine.

The Swans Legends, whom this time were managed by Lee Trundle and Mark Clode, had plenty of experience in their line-up with the likes of Steve Jones, Chris Todd, Jon Ford, Andrew Mumford, John Williams, Adrian Forbes, Jonathan Coates, Owain Tudur-Jones and Kerry Morgan all featuring.

In terms of appearances, father time obviously hadn’t been kind to some of the former Vetch Field favourites, but whilst their athletic physique might have deserted some of them, their skills and trickery most certainly hadn’t.

To his credit, referee Tom Bateman let a sometimes physical but good natured game flow, which helped aid the quality of the game, if not the stamina levels of some of those involved!

Despite the Swans Legends backline of Jones, Tudur-Jones and Ford looking solid, Carmarthenshire took the lead, somewhat against the run of play.

It didn’t take the Swans long to equalise though as the hard working duo of John Williams and Adrian Forbes, with the latter curling a glorious equaliser beyond a stranded Carmarthenshire Locals keeper.

Jonathan Coates was putting in a workmanlike performance down the left flank, before tiring after giving chase to one too many through balls.

Several chances went begging before another Forbesy goal put the Swans in front – much to the delight of the Swans fans in the crowd.

A rare Carmarthenshire attack led to a shock equaliser, which seemed to spur the legends on and shortly afterwards a typical 30 yard drive from Andrew Mumford nestled into the far corner to give the Swans Legends a 3-2 lead.

As half-time approached Adrian Forbes completed his hat-trick and the Swans went into the break with a healthy 5-2 lead. Amongst the excitement I can’t remember who got the Swans 4th!!

Half-time saw Trundle and Clode ring the changes, with a clearly tired Ford, Williams and Coates being replaced.

The second half continued much in the same vein as the first with the energetic Kerry Morgan pulling all the strings in midfield.

His dominance allowed the marauding full-back Steve Jones and the ever-so-communicative Owain Tudur-Jones to bomb forward at every given opportunity.

Former Swan Bari Morgan, who lined up for the locals, had his work cut-out trying to cope with his namesake and current Merthyr Town player Morgan.

It was also nice to see young Charlie Clode given a run-out in his Dad’s jersey, whom was missing due to a recent knee operation.

Such was the Swans dominance in the 2nd period it seemed as though the only objective was to get Chris Todd on the score-sheet, something which he sadly failed to do, despite numerous glorious opportunities.

With the Carmarthenshire Locals beginning to flag in the extremely hot conditions, Tudur-Jones completed his hat-trick, the pick of which was a sublime free-kick, the Swans Legends eventually ran out comfortable 9-2 winners in an entertaining game.

After the game, several of the former Swans stopped to chat, have photographs and sign autographs with the Swans fans who were old enough to remember them – as one young lad pertinently pointed out to his Dad!

At the time of writing, I’m not sure how much money was raised for the Swans4Cancer charity, but it was certainly an enjoyable day for the spectators and one which this fan in particular, hopes to see return next year.

You can see some of the Swansea City legends in action, by taking a look at the picture gallery of the Swansea City Legends v Carmarthenshire Locals 2018 match, that has been put together by Duncan Thomas.

Not siding with the board but I think their hands are tied as the power this summer will be with the players. This comings and goings we're about to experience will be decided by the players contracts.

Although partially culpable for our drop into the championship I assume every player has a relegation release clause written in gold, bold ink into their contracts. I don't see many if any staying to face the consequences of their piss poor, gutless efforts of last season [Fabianski and J Ayew excluded from criticism]

Even with King and Ayew and without Sanchez and Clement, the team managed to end the season with a string of woeful results at least as poor as the ones which led to the dismissal of Clement at the beginning of the season.

When it mattered most they managed 0, sero, null, zéro, cero, pagh, zero wins in their last 7, saith, seiben, sept, siete, soch seven fekkin games. A win and a draw top of the points they managed to scrape during that period, would have saved us from the drop, but the ****e they served up during that seven game stretch sent us crashing.

So who wants out? This is speculation on my part

Allegedly Clucass, Fernandez, Naughton have already asked to leave so can't see them staying

Messa, **** him, waste of space imo

Carroll, I'd like him to stay, I feel time in the championship could make him.

    A. Ayew, if he's gonna stay then he can't sulk, if he does then give him away, save money on his wages. The Championship is no place for egos who think they are to good to be playing in it.

Narsingh, could thrive in the championship, he's not a bad player just needs to play week in week out imo, I think he'll be good for us next year and beyond.

Bony? looks like he's stuck here, who'd want to pay the money he'd want when he's crocked?

McBurnie, has to want out, he was badly treated and poorly managed last season imo when he was overlooked in favor of a loanee who failed on every level.

Bartley, has to stay imo but a big factor is what happens to Fernandez. Bartley is another player poorly managed last season. He looked great up until his injury then didn't get a look in after his recovery. He must feel like he's wasting his career here and my fear is he'll be sold for fekk all to go somewhere else and show how good he actually is. Personally, I feel he's our best CB and I'd make him club captain starting from yesterday. If the owners sell him to Leeds then they'll be proving how ****ed up they truly are.

VDH, again an under rated player imo and I think he and Bartley would form a formidable pairing in any division. If they stayed and played then they'd be the rock solid foundation needed to build our way back into the premiership. Remember folks, its just my opinion

Olsson is Ok but we still need back up (as we did last year) at LB, especially if Clucass goes.

Roberts is the only good to come out of last season imo, reminded me of Ben Davies when he came in and dominated at LB.

Fabianski and J Ayew deserve to stay in the prem good luck to both and thank you for trying

Returning we have Jordi Amat, is that good? not good? I haven't a clue

Monterro? should rip it up but I doubt he will if he stays. It gets real cold in some places in the championship.

and wtf is going to happen with Baston? can't say I'm keen on him at all, maybe we should learn our lesson and stop looking to Spain, they rarely travel well. Other than Michu the next best was Hernades and he was Ok and little more. He'll probably be going home so adiós.

Add the best of the U23 into the mix and somewhere, in among the mess, is a decent team waiting to be found, a tweak here a splice there, I think we're going to be Ok. Whether Ok will be good enough to get us back into the prem remains to be seen but Fulham just got promoted and I think their just about the worst team to get promotion since Derby County beat WBA in 2007.

Before the big kick off though, I'm really looking forward to all the summer shenanigans we've got coming our way.

£5m, bargain, Liverpool? what you reckon Dai?

Not got a clue about who'se got what clause in their contract Dai but I know a relegation release clause is different to triggering a minimum release clause or a buy out clause in players contracts. Relegation clauses, depending on what was negotiated, could mean that a player could leave for well under his actual value.

Think we'll have to watch this space and see what develops. We need to sign up a manager before any talks on the comings and goings of the squad can even begin imo.

To be honest, there are not many players I would keep, Van, Olsson, Bartley, Narsingh, Roberts, Dyer, are probably worth keeping for the Championship, as for Carol not sure I would keep him, would far prefer to offload him for Joe Allen if it was possible,.

As for Clueless, Naughton, and Fernandez, well if they want out, I'll be very happy indeed, dross all of them.

We should get some good money for Mesa, Ayew brothers, Mawson, and Fab, not sure what will happen to Baston, gone very quite, maybe he can do a job in the Championship, he's still under contract, make him work for his money.

We should get the Potter coronation this weekend....... <cheers>

True and it's been the same for the last three seasons. We have to get it right off the field before we can start improving on it.

Do you know i have scoured every gossip column i can find and most of the prices of the players we need and should be going for are outrageous and well over the top that i can't see us ever going for them as we would never pay those prices,,,Bloody hell we cant even agree a compensation for Potts and that will be a small amount compared to buying good players we need....Football is governed by Greed and it is ruining football sides that has to live on a budget and can't afford these over the top transfer fees.......Sad really

Shows how low we have sunk really........Fab who has had fantastic support from the fans now wants to turn his back on them....He has earned good money and more than Arsenal paid him and he has benefited signing for us tenfold. Now we see the true fab as he turns his back on his fans and says "I'm off" He is not the only one either.....What has happened to the love of the greatest fans they keep on about.....It was nothing but hot air as they never gave a toss in reality and that goes for welsh players also like Joe Allen and co......You would think they would give us at least one season to try and get back at the first attempt but no mate i dont care....I wish the club would say that nobody under contract is going anywhere this season as we want the strongest side we can possibly field in our first season to give us the best chance of going up at the first attempt....

The club has fermented the want away players by the way they run the squad down, no player worth his salt wants to graft with under par team mates, success breads success, and the opposite is also true regarding failure, cannot say I'm surprised with our better players wanting out not their fault we are down, that goes to the Clown Jenkins.....<ok>

I think that apart from Fab and Mawson I don'think any of our players would be wanted by PL clubs and possibly Fernandez might go to Europe. Whether Celtic or Rangers can afford the fees that should be asked for our players they have been linked with I don't know. As we are a championship club we don't need to loan any of our players to other championship clubds If they are good enough for them then they are good enough for us I would like to see Bony, Dyer and Routledge moved on and replaced by younger players whether from within or bought in. Potter will have the advantage that Toshack and Richards did try to play a more attacking and passing style with the under 23's New managers like to work with players they know and that probably means the two guys from Oosterunde. The young lest back from Real Madrid, possibly on loan, looks a good idea as well. If Fab moves that means Nordvelt, Mulder and Zabret will be our three goalies so we don't really need another one. So that will be our probable squad for next season and I don't think it's as weak as some people fear. Of course some further departures may change all that.

Even after one or two stars leave and you shed some of the salary burden you'll still have some decent players.
I suppose the challenge will be around the style of play. Will the remaining players suit the 'new' style? How quickly will they take on board Potters philosophy? Can you find one or two gems to slot into the squad?
Might be mid season before you hit your straps.
Hopefully you can be close enough to the top to kick on when things settle down and you make the top 6.
Not sure how Villa, Derby and 'Brough will fare after their failed bids this year with Villa seemingly having financial challenges. I'm sure there are a few others who will fancy themselves to be in the mix.

Don't agree Dragon They all enjoyed the good times and they are all to blame for us going down.....They never played to their potential that we know they are capable of,,,,,They all deserve to play Championship football for the up and coming season as they are responsible for taking us down....make them stay for one season at least...

You cannot have two or three good players carrying a team of dross Dai! that's what we had this season, and we failed to get over the finishing line, Jordan and Fab deserve to remain in top flight, they both were top draw and PL quality, the rest fell short...............<ok>
