Once again the rumours are doing the rounds that Barcelona are willing to sell fabregas. Apparently he and Sanchez will be sold (along with a few others if the right offers come in) to make funds available for the new manager to revitalise the squad.

It may well just be a rumour but we know utd tried to sign him last summer and so Barcelona are aware they can get good money for him if they need funds for new players.

If he becomes available and utd and/or another club makes an offer for him that barca want to accept then the clause is activated giving us first refusal. There are different bits of information about what that clause is, whether it's half of what another club bids or a straight 35m buy-back. But this probably puts the price we would pay somewhere in the 20-40m range.

My question is, despite him not necessarily playing a position we are in dire need to reinforce, would you want us to buy him back if the situation arises this summer?

For me he is the level of player that if he is available you go for him. He's world class and the idea of him and ozil in the team together is mouth watering. What do you think?

Striker, CDM, Rb, GK and a Cb (a youthful one, 2 if TV leaves). If we sign those players and there are funds leftover - absolutely buy him as he is quality. But we already bought a WC AM last year when many other parts should have been filled. Lets not go and do it again.

Also if we are looking at rumours I would far rather be linked to Toure.

For me fabregas is good enough and versatile enough to change plans for. He can play as a deep lying mid, cm, am, wide am, false 9. And he is so good that he'd take us up a level.

I agree there are areas that need to be addressed. Replacing out going players has to happen and ideally a new striker is top of the list of new recruitments, but players like fabregas are not available often and if we can get him back I would.

Ramsey until his injuries had made more tackles than anyone in our team and the league at one point. I don't think the opposition would ever have the ball anyway!

Wouldn't necessarily always be the best option though. Sticking in a flamini type for certain games would be ideal :p
 
One if them would have to be dropped tbh, that would probably be Ramsey for Flamini like you said but having him in the bench would be a waste.
 
He would be a luxury signing. We need a top class striker and a pacy, top class winger IMO. They are the priorities. As well as a replacement for Sagna.
 
For me Fabregas would be a direct replacement for Arteta. When Fabregas plays defensively, for me he is the same in terms of style, but better. I didn't think Arteta would make a good defensive player, but he seems to have worked out.

I can see why those people who are after a big old-fashioned DM might be unhappy with us signing Fabregas, but I do think in terms of depth, and definitely against sides we should beat, Fabregas would be my preference.

If Arteta leaves, then Fabregas would be a very good replacement. We can replace Flamini with the new Big DM.

I agree with this I think a pacey wing forward and a striker are the two positions where we could really add to the squad. And if Sagna is indeed off as it appears then his replacement is vital but I don't think we will go for an expensive option there.

But fabregas can basically play anywhere in the front 6 and would give the team a real lift. The very best players are only available every now and then and I'd like to see us take the opportunity if it arises.

Agreed I can see fabregas in a deep lying role, dictating play and bringing the ball out from deeper areas, linking the defense and attack. He's confident on the ball and has an excellent passing range and vision and he would be a big step up on Arteta I think (despite Arteta being a very solid player).

Flamini gives us an option with more bite and if we got fabregas I'd forgive the club not signing a dm in this window.

Fabregas--Ramsey
Ozil.

Would tear apart the majority of teams with fabregas sitting deep like Gerrard has this season for Liverpool, Ramsey as the box to box and ozil further up the field.

For a more defensive approach or when we are playing a posession team where we need to break up play more, then as you say bring flamini in.

It's a long season and one setup doesn't have to work for all games, it's about the squad.

I'd hate to see him back in the prem at another team. He is truly world class. Whenever I watch him for Barcelona the way he moves the ball around is brilliant to watch.

I'd take him and play him as a deeper midfield player rather than in ozils place.

If he leaves it better be back to us!

It's a transfer I can see happening. The clause is there and wenger doesn't hide his praise for fabregas. Players of his level are few and far between and he is a realistic world class player we could go for.
 
IF he's available and especially if he could come back to the Prem, then we really need to buy him for a number of reasons. I can't see any scenario that buying him would be bad. The following reasons why we should buy him should he become available:

- our best player since the Invincibles
- our best midfielder since Vieira
- one of the best midfielders in the Premiership and world
- proven quality and can easily slot into our team and make it arguably the best midfield in the Prem/Europe
- denying the opposition a world class player
- increase shirt sales and revenue
- a complete midfielder who can defend/create/score
- give our midfield better balance, with Fab/Ramsey playing deep and Ozil playing ahead
 
He's going to cost what? 25 million and upwards, atm we need to concentrate our funds on players we really need, striker, winger, new RB, if there's anything left, and we can get him, then we see.
 
If we have leftover money after addressing the DM, RB and Striker issue then sure (unles Cesc is willing to play in the Arteta role). Actually come to think of it could that work? Cesc being a pseudo CM/DM like Arteta is right now?

But realistically as A87 says we have bigger issues to worry about
 
Agree that we need a top CF, but can we afford for Fabs to go to one of our competitors? We know what he's capable of and as far as we know, his preferred destination would be Arsenal. I'm sure we have the finances to buy a top striker and Cesc. I know it's a lot of money but the risk would be worth it, as we know how destructive Fabs will be in the Premiership.
