No, we had a deal in place. Athletico went back on it, and paid their way out. Toby, I thought was very respectful......although happy to land at Spurs.
I liked Cedric and am kinda sad to see him go but I think its the right decision and I don't think we should replace him this month. Give Valery a run and use JWP if needed in that position. I think Ralph will be happy with less options so he can find a settled team so don't really expect any in comings this month.
1st season 5/10 2nd season 7/10 3rd season 7.5/10 This season 4/10 I said that last season that he was one of our most improved players (despite his crossing and he got plenty of practice under MP2!) I hope that he can re-descover his form at Inter in a league that he may be better suited for. Good Luck Rhett.
They hardly went back on it, they had it written in the contract. Them paying their way out was part of the 'deal'.
That's what I remember....it wasn't a straightforward option. Was clear from the start that it was unclear....if you see what I mean It was much talked about when he joined....and then segued into being a done deal in some people's minds.
Although Saints threatened legal action because Athletico didn’t exercise their buy-out option in time, so it wasn’t completely straightforward. Talking of Toby, his contract ends in 2020, and he hasn’t exactly won a lot at Spuds... I wonder?
We had a deal to buy him for £6.9M. They let the dead line pass, and paid us a penalty fee to buy him out of the original agreement. They went back on it. They were actually pretty sneaky. They pretended he was in their plans, then sold him to Spurs who had done considerable ground work in obtaining him already.
Think he has some release clause that kicks in now/summer, seem to remember talk of it when Utd were looking at him. Rumour I heard was that he wanted to go back to Ajax when his deal expired and won't sign a new one at Spurs
Think it comes in when he has a year left or something, not too sure but when Utd were heavily linked last summer there was lots of talk about it and why Spurs would be better off selling then as he didn't want to sign a new deal
I don’t think Toby Alderweireld is refusing to sign a new deal at Spurs because he wants to return to Saints But on the other hand, he was careful not to burn any bridges here...
The other thing about Toby, as well as being a damn good CB and a great passer of the ball, he can also play very well at RB or RWB.
I personally think it's a good move for all (although I thought Inter had the Croatia right back?), but would like it to have been a higher fee, and an obligation, not an option.
