Somebody offered me a nice 08 plate BMW 525 Touring for my Touareg, but I need something a bigger tbh. Looking for a VW Transporter van, but they are stupid money.

If I sell lots of vegan hippy **** I might be able to save a few grand and then PX my Touareg against one.

Why don’t you get a Mercedes Vito?

Looking at camper conversions of them as the Mrs wants a camper.

Yeah I've been looking a few, they are significantly cheaper. Trouble is they've got a reputation for rusting out. And I live near the sea with loads of salty air.

VW’s are just as bad. My mate has a 2014 vw camper and it’s got patches of rust.

It’s for bits of rust of the sliding door, not loads like.

I saw a transit conversion in France, quite a new one, looked ace.

Transits are even worse for rusting out though. Personally wouldn't touch one. If I was going to do a camper, and didn't have a big budget for a VW, I'd probably go for a Merc sprinter or Renault Trafic

Don’t think the new ones have. My mate has a modern one for his works van and it’s great. Got everything on it too.

Yeah don't know about the new ones. Down here in Cornwall though I wouldn't buy a van unless it's got a galvanised body. Also make sure I waxoyl the underneath of my vehicles as the salt down here just rusts them out.

Have you tried the import market for a camper?

I had the estima and hiace supercustom. Both weren't campers as such, as I needed the 8 seats, but they had tables and the seats turned around and even became beds etc

The Mazda bongo comes as a camper and is nice. For pure luxury try the Nissan elgrand

Also I owned a lwb transporter. It was a van converted to a 12 seater. I bought it that way but it's suprisingly easy to get done and cheaper

There are some cheap VW transporters to be had for sale in Ireland. Pretty cheap to register on U.K. plates too.

Bongos are a bit small for me and I really need something with a load bay and seats in the back. I’ve looked at a few panel vans and thought about converting one myself. They tend to be low spec vans though and I need one with air con for my business as I transport food around.

Always wondered what the crack was with bringing cars from Ireland to England. What do you know?

Some cheap bargains to be had, but iirc the cars can be a mess or something due to driving conditions and no mot. Can't remember details, as you can tell, may have been NI

Also piskie, as daft as this may sound have you looked at ex ambulances to convert?

You can import vehicles from N.I without any issues as it’s part of the U.K. For vehicles from the Rep of Ireland you have to register them on U.K. plates but I think it’s only about £60 and a form form the DVLA.

Not sure what the MOT status is in the republic. But I seem to remember it wasn’t anywhere near as stringent as the U.K.

Definitley some bargains to be had though. Would be We’l worth a flight to Dublin/Cork and paying the ferry costs back to save around £2/3k per £10k on U.K. prices.

Not really interested in converting an old ambulance. But I have been looking at ex-RAC VW Transporters. They tend to auction them off every time they buy a new fleet. You can pick up a 2012 van with FSH for around £8.5k

:emoticon-0148-yes:

Yeah I just mentioned the ambulances as I recall looking at one a while back and it had all the air conditioning and then some in the back.

The lighting alone was wow

I looked at a Luton van once with a view to convert to a camper. Sounds daft but I'd seen one with a "mezzanine" type sleeping area and all the space below

In Rouen France, a hippy Spanish friend and his Scottish Mrs use a Vauxhall combo van thing to sleep in during the didgeridoo festival

I do prefer BMW mate but at the luxury end of the market Merc's S class wipes the floor with the 7 series.

Doubt I'll ever get to choose between the 2 mate.

At that level, they're hard to pull apart though.

I'd drive anything mate. Honestly I'm not bothered by the vehicle that gets me home from work or to the office.

There's a fleet of nice cars at work and when I've got a meeting that requires me to not take the van I can take my pick. I always pic the Merc because it's brilliant and I'm not scared of being brutally murdered if I stuffed it into a wall by accident.
