I've always said I think he was pushed out of the door. Whether all that is true you've printed, who knows, I take it all with a pinch of salt I've heard so many versions! What I do know is that in modern day football if a player is told the club have accepted a bid and they want to sell him, the player never stays unless it represents a step down in wages. (a la Smith). You don't stay where you're not wanted. The club wanted shot, he had no choice. He probably thought "well **** them, I get to quadruple my wages and play for a bigger club who are better equipped" Can't blame him.

He may have been told by various people to leave but if he would have asked any of the 52000 loyal newcastle fans who sang and supported him they would have told him to stay. And he knows that.

Nobody held a gun to his head and forced him out.

Greedy bastard <ok>

Unfortunately though, football doesn't work like that anymore. Its an employer/employee relationship, the same as we have with our own employers. If I was told I was not wanted, I wouldn't do a Smith and hang around, particularly if I was being presented with the opportunity to quadruple my wage and move to a bigger company. Its a no brainer. Do you think Shearer would have stayed if our owners at the time had accepted a bid from Man U, told him they wanted him to go and Man U wanted to pay him more money? He'd have gone like a shot. Doesn't make him disloyal or greedy
