Premier League footballer Emiliano Sala was on a light aircraft which went missing over the Channel Islands, the French Civil Aviation authority said.

The Argentine striker was one of two people on board the Piper Malibu which lost contact off Alderney in the Channel Islands on Monday night.

Cardiff City signed the 28-year-old for a club-record £15m fee from French club Nantes on Saturday.

Guernsey Police said there was "no trace" of the Cardiff-bound aircraft.

Terrible news. Doesn't look good.

Think it’s too late for that now in reality mate, 14 hours in the sea in winter? Slim to say the least. The only hope is the thing landed somewhere but then there’d have been contact.

Bigger than football.
I know mate but I am an eternal optimist! I know realistically that they're probably both gone.

Far far bigger

Suspended the search :-(

Guernsey Police said there was "no trace" of the Cardiff-bound flight and has suspended the search for the night.

"We have found no signs of those on board," the force tweeted.

"If they did land on the water, the chances of survival are at this stage, unfortunately, slim."

Some wreckage spotted before the search was stopped for the night.. No confirmation as to whether it was from the missing plane..It is not looking hopeful..

Pilot should not have been flying at

Nothing to do with the plane. Pilot wasn't licensed to take paying passengers, and flying a single engine plane over open water at night/low light circumstances is just compleatly idiotic. Lives lost due to someone looking to make a quick profit imo

Tradegy and a great shame

Willie McKay involved, says its nowt to do with him tho ...

Someone set up a ‘go fund me’ page to pay to resume the search and it’s made 300k in a few hours.

Loads of footballers making huge donations, mainly Marseille players oddly.

It’s a real shame but absolutely no chance is someone alive after 5 days in the sea in winter.
