To be honest I have to say that Hammond is not going to be strong enough to be captain either on the field or in the dressing room in my opinion. As for club Captain KD should keep that honour for now but later I would like it to go to Adam Lallana. Either of the centre backs for me should have the on field captaincy.

Yep, agreed. Unless Hammond has a massive fall in form, or is transferred out of the club, or until a whole new level of player inevitably begins to come to Southampton FC, I believe they should leave the captains and deputies as they are. I also, am not fond of lead strikers being captains so, sorry Rickie, but you wouldn't be my choice, however good an example you are. As it happens, I don't like goalkeepers being captains either, but Kelvin is not the captain on the field, so that makes it alright. Almost anywhere in defence or midfield is where I like to see a captain play.
To me, the whole 'we shouldn't have a striker as a captain because he doesn't see all the pitch whereas a centre back does' seems a bit strange to me.
Very rarely do I see a striker who only ever faces the oppostion goal, even when the ball is behind him. In fact, I don't think I have ever seen a striker who acts this way.
Strikers face which way the ball is - if their team is defending they face that side of the pitch, and when they are attacking, assuming the ball is in front of them, they face the oppostion goal, so they are seeing the play, similar to centre backs, sometimes they face their own goal, or the opposition goal, depending on where the ball is.
What I'm getting at is, I see no reason why someone like Lambert should not be captain and Jose or Jos should, as they both do see the whole pitch.

Lambert has one of the most important jobs on the field to do - score goals. I wouldn't want his head messed with making sure team morale was good, even if Saints are losing, driving the team forward to better efforts, or making sure that the manager's tactics are correctly being followed, or that everyone is in their right positions a set pieces, etc...
I wouldn't be keen on giving Lallana the captaincy, but I'd cetainly be up for Lambert leading us out onto the pitch. Comes across, at least to me, as a leader and heart of a lion type character, at least on the pitch any way.
I don't think it matters. The armband will just go to whichever one of the previously mentioned players is on the pitch, and if none are then someone else. It won't change how any of them behave on or off the pitch, except one of them has to call a coin flip. If you go abroad to France, Italy, Spain etc none of them make a big deal out of it at all.
Gary Lineker once said he'd have loved to be England cricket captain as you could really influence the game.
If Hammond plays then I think he should be captain. He was excellent in that role last year. So the question really is, is he good enough? I think he is although I doubt he'll play every game. He reminds me of Nick Holmes who was an essential Saints player for many years. He was never the one that people talked about but I bet he was one of the first names on the team sheet. Very solid, 'fetcher and carrier' type that every team needs.
I'm sorry but comparing Nick Holmes with Hammond is stretching things just a tad far. Holmes was a high quality left sided midfielder and/or full back. He scored important goals. He was as hard as nails without being a liability. In today's terms Holmes would be worth between 6 and 8 million at his peak. In my view if you took the best of Fox and Harding and sprinkled a bit of extra talent dust on it you might get Holmes. If he had played for a more fashionable club he would have won international recognition at a senior level. If we could get a million for Hammond we should bite the buyer's hand off. I sincerely hope I'm wrong and that I underestimate Hammond's capabilities, because he is a Saints player.. but I doubt it..
Nick Holmes was class. remember one goal he scored at the Milton end. Shot virtually from half way line. If Beckham had done it there would have been headlines everywhere.
Our strength is as a team rather than individuals. The trick now is to get more skilful players and slip them into the team without disrupting it.
I have to say that strikers shouldn't be captains imo. However, I think Lambert has been captain before for a cup game (might have been Torquay). For me, one of the centre backs for now but I like Morgan to have it in the future, if he stays at Saints that is - and that's a big if.
Why? He's happy, there has been no firm interest in him so far, and he's on a long contract. I don't see him leaving.
Morgan said that he was asked by friends what he was doing in League 1 and he replied that he loved it here and the team were going places. Can't see him leaving any time soon.
None of us can really have an informed opinion of who should be captain, theres more to it than just being "one of our best players" factors like, personality, ability to communicate the managers message on the pitch, being someone that the other players listen to, all stuff like that, that you would only ever know if you were actually part of the squad, but having said all that, im going to speculate anyway and say it seems like Jos could be that guy !!!
I can see him having a very impressive season, which could lead to the big clubs coming in for him - he´s only young, his head could easily be turned by it. And there´s the fact that he will want to play for France.
