I don't expect many people will remember this game. Charlton and Sunderland played a goalless draw at the Valley on December 7th 1963. I was 14 at the time. It is still the best goalless match I've every seen. Without magnificent goalkeeping by Mike Rose and Jim *****mery it would have finished 6all.

I remember it well ……I was 17 days old ! <laugh>

The worst game for us that I've seen was the 7-1 loss to Luton, when our best player was our goalie. I was quite pissed on Greene King Abbott, but remember our goal coming from a mystery penalty awarded by Roger Kirkpatrick, who apparently felt sorry for us. He was famous for his sideburns, and for being able to run backwards faster than other refs could run forwards.
Another was the 0-1 loss at home to Wycombe in the League Cup which sealed the fate of the hapless Les Reed. They were 2 or 3 leagues below us and the players couldn't give a sh1t. Probably the only game where I've roundly booed them.

Don't know what was so offensive about Montgomery that it was edited out...

Somebody edited your post @dzc10 ?

I assure you it was not me.
As moderator, I am supposed to be able to see editing information about any other member's post.
So if any other Not606 moderator had chosen to change the contents of your post I should be able to see who it was and when they did it.

(self edit)

Ah, I think I understand what happened.
Sorry, the penny was a bit slow to drop for me.
The quote of your message that @Smudger603 posted gave me the clue.

You mis-spelled Montgomery's name in your original post, accidentally leaving out the 't'.
That meant the first five letters of the name appeared to spell a word which is probably on a list of words that are automatically edited out by a spell checking process on Not606.

There are a number of words (mostly swear-words, but also some old-fashioned terms used to describe folk of other races or creeds, or disabled people, terms that are now considered offensive) which the Not606 forum automatically edits out.

I think you accidentally triggered that process.
As mentioned, it's an automatic thing. Nobody consciously edited your post.
I thought I would mention this just for the general information of all readers. It's not intended as a criticism of anyone.

It was definitely automatic. It changed as soon as I posted it. I didn't think anyone had edited it. These systems are just getting too clever for their own good. Let me try *****...

Anyhow Montgomery or xxxxxmery was brilliant that day. As he was against Leeds in that memorable cup final. I can't remember if that was the match where Eddie Firmani managed to put the ball from the pitch, a yard out in the middle of the goal over the bar. I suspect it was. I definitely remember him doing that. Almost impossible to do deliberately.

Possibly not two of Charlton's greatest performances, but certainly two extraordinary scorelines.
And both games played within a three week period in the Autumn of 1960.

SCP's only goal, in his last game after he came on as a late sub, is one of my top 10 favourite Charlton goals.

Perhaps we should start a video clips thread of favourite goals & other moments.

I don't know if there already is one on this forum, possibly from before my time here.
I'll go looking for one later.
