Something new - One Season Wonders Will post these occasionally along with the Best & Worst sets... #1 #2
Unfortunately Mills played for Charlton on two separate occasions in different seasons. But here's a couple more... #3 #4 Swedish International Hasse Jeppson almost certainly saved Charlton from relegation in 1951 with his 9 goals in just 11 starts during the New Year. Charlton won 7 games in the 12 match spell that Jeppson featured in (missing just one game) The Addicks only won 7 other games that whole season.
#5 #6 I know the stats of Albert 'Mosky' Mills don't look too impressive. But I have included him here as a mark of respect and recognition. Albert Mills is one of only two players who featured in Charlton's first ever season (1905-06) and went on to play for the Addicks in the Football League sixteen years later, during season 1921-22. The other player was Johnny Mitchell. He will be featured in this set later. If all CAFC stats were counted, including all their amateur seasons going back to 1905, Albert Mills would be the most decorated player in Charlton Athletic history. He won a dozen knock-out Cups and featured in Charlton teams that won a dozen leagues between 1907 and 1920. Mills must have played several hundred games and scored dozens, indeed probably many more than a hundred goals. It is a curiosity that Albert Mills & Alfie May featured in teams that finished in the same position in the same tier of English Football, 102 years apart.
#7 #8 Harold 'Dusty' Miller was Charlton's second highest goal-scorer of the 1922-23 season (Alex Steele was top with 13) But Miller's 11 goals from 20 starts gave him the highest goals-per-game ratio, of over 1 in 2. However, cash-strapped Charlton could not refuse when Chelsea FC offered £1,500 for him, a massive sum in that era. Miller went on to play 16 seasons for the Pensioners.
#9 #10 Frederic Bulot's win percentage was rather better than that for the whole team over 46 games that season (30.4%) Johnny Mitchell was one of the original 11 lads who formed the Charlton Athletic team on East Street in the Summer of 1905. Unlike Albert 'Mosky' Mills who joined CAFC from Crescent United in March 1906, Mitchell was there right from the very start. Like Mills, Mitchell won a dozen knock-out Cups with Charlton and a dozen amateur League Titles up until 1920. He would have played hundreds of games for the Addicks. Mitchell's father was one of the men who organised the creation of Charlton Athletic Football Club.
#40 I'm waiting for the end of this season to see who we ship out. There are a few candidates for worst players ever...
