Two memories of Harry
A thirty-five yarder at The Valley, changed direction half way through its flight and nearly took the net with it.
Game against Palace at Selhurst - an unwise young man actually fouled Harry, who picked himself straight up and walked away. I saw a lot of Addicks look disbelievingly at each other because we pretty much knew what was coming. The next time the bloke went near the ball, he literally went flying in the air and Harry trotted over to the referee to get booked.
Agreed Stu we never saw the best of him as a player, but I remember speaking to a couple of players some years after he packed up and they both said what a fine assistant manager and strong, supportive bloke he was.
Here's another one for the nostalgia merchants - although not in the Donkey category (or maybe he was, in your opinion)...

My aged memory may be playing tricks, but didn't we have two midfielders called David Campbell in roughly the same era? One was a shortish Irish guy we bought from Forest for a sizable sum but didn't last long. The other was a local schoolboy star (but not, if I remember correctly, a product of our own youth system). He was much taller. I don't think he played many games for us. This was earlier, maybe in the '70s? I couldn't bring my Cameron reference books because of the limited baggage allowance.

First things first on last night's game, why is there no heating in the seats? God dammit I was cold.
Very frustrating match, what annoyed me the most was the lack of movement until the last 10 mins or so. Counted a few times where a throw in was taken long and possession lost because nobody moved into a decent position.
The goal, take a bow son, take a bow, absolute screamer, my favourite moment of the season so far. Keeps the unbeaten record going.
Can't make Saturday's game unfortunately but dragging the girlfriend along to the MK Dons game on Valentines Day, not gonna make me too popular.

Stu, I was in the same year as David Campbell so you are a Roan boy to? I have to say that I always considered him a bit of a tart but hey ho!
Dave was very good at schoolboy level (football and cricket) but just wasn't up to it at professional level, but he was at our then youth system along with about 4 others from Roan. The best player at the school was Garry Micklewhite who finished his career at the Jills.
Welcome Waddick, good write-up perhaps the comment about being more chatty is aimed at the fact that it is your blog which would normally be your views on the game rather than the formal style you have used which is more of a media summary of the game
Anyway well done

No, not Alan. I wouldn't forget him. The Fresh Prince of Kirkintilloch Rob Rob is possibly my favorite all-time Charlton player (for personal reasons).

Gents, been away for a few days, just catching up and I confess to having only read the last page of this thread so far. Sorry everyone if I go off-track a bit here but exited to find an Old Ronian or two here...and the chance for a quick trip down memory lane.... sad I know. AllHell, Stu etc....I was at Roan as were 4 of my older brothers...including ex-Director David (White)....who may have also been in David Campbell's year.... watched the school team with David Campbell and co. win the English Schools cup......then was on the bench myself for the final the following year when we also won....kept out of the side by Aidrian Foley, Theo's son......disgraceful decision....never forgiven him! Anyway we won 4-1 at Stoke's old ground having played the semi at, cough cough, splutter, splutter...The D*n. David was the captain the year before and his brother Neil our year. I have a nice picture of us in the dressing room after the match which I could send you if you are remotley bothered and if you want to see who you might recognise. David was a tall cultured midfield player who made a good start for CAFC, I thought, in his first few games but proved a bit slow, getting caught in possession a lot. The ex-CAFC great Cyril Davies did some coaching with us as a side-line as part of his new job as Roan School assistant groundsman! He had to retire very early in his career and no wonder...his knees were completely shot. Phil Coleman who was also in that side (David's), a big strapping centre-half who went on to play quite a few games for The Wall I believe and a number of others were signed up for clubs but most got stuck in the reserves and moved on to something new outside of football. Gary Micklewhite was head and shoulders above all of us, an unbelievably gifted player....got signed up straight from school by Manchester United...but only made it to the bench I believe. When I think about how good a player he was and the fact that he never really made it big (although I think he has an FA Cup winners medal when he played in a replay.....QPR I think?) it makes me realise how good you really have to be....and why I and the rest of us were doomed to fail. Sorry to the non-Roanites and when I catch up with the rest of the thread I may post something marginally more interesting.........end of long boring post!!

Redder....In my years at Roan, competitions were always between Rodney (blue) and Nelson (red) with Drake (green) nearly always third the poor buggers in ??? (yellow) won diddley.
I think David Campbell was in Nelson so I always seemed to be against him at sports, I remember at a house cricket game when he came in at 3 as their star batsman I moved myself to silly mid on, the second ball he played a forward defensive stroke and I dived forward and caught it about 18 inches from his bat. He said I was cheating by standing so close so I gave him the finger
he NEVER talked to me after that even if we travelled home on the same bus 
The first of the school cup finals was at St Andrews wasn't it, we were playing a team from Wolverhampton, the 1st, 2nd & 3rd year coaches arrived early in Brum and some locals 15,16 & 17 year olds were waiting for them, our teachers gave then some protection but then our 6th form coaches arrived having visited a pub on the way (there was also some guests from Millwall - mates of a Roan boy) everybody was off the coaches almost before they had stopped ...... I have to say them Black Country boys can really run fast when being followed by cockneys

All sorted now. My memory was not at fault. This was the other David Campbell at Charlton (I used Wikipedia to do my research - it's wonderful, you should try it sometime).

The only reason I raised the issue was some people were saying David Campbell was rubbish and others the opposite, so I thought they should establish first which one they were talking about.
