Positions are decided by:
1. Points
2. Goal difference
3. Goals Scored
4. Head to Head
5. Playoff if promotion or relegation is at stake, otherwise alphabetical
It could happen but very unlikely.
Middlesbrough and Brighton can't finish level on points. Middlesbrough and Burnley can but Burnley would go up on the head to head rule. Brighton and Burnley drew both their games so on head to head they are level. Burnley are ahead on goal difference (33 to 30), Brighton on goals (70 to 68).
For Brighton's goal difference to improve they have to win at least one of their remaining games. If that is against Middlesbrough then Brighton would go above them and be promoted. If Brighton win the other game and draw with Middlesbrough, again, they would be above them and promoted. So the only combination of results that works is Brighton win their other game and lose to Middlesbrough.
They have to win by 3 more goals than they lose the other game by. Lets say they win 4-0 and lose 1-0, improving their goal difference to 33 and giving them 74 goals. That means that Burnley would also need to win one game and lose one. They would have to score 6 goals to make them equal to Brighton and concede 8 to get the goal differences equal.
