It could still go down to goal difference. eg Burnley and Brighton both win this weekend. Burnley lose their last game and Boro beat Brighton. It will be between Burnley and Brighton on GD
They were saying on five live last night that because all 3 teams are close on points and goal difference, it is unlikely but if result fall in a certain way then 2nd and 3rd might need to play off for the 2nd automatic position, with the loser going into the actual play off's.
Wouldn't it go on head to head? Or is that level too? Other leagues use head to head before goal difference.
Positions are decided by: 1. Points 2. Goal difference 3. Goals Scored 4. Head to Head 5. Playoff if promotion or relegation is at stake, otherwise alphabetical It could happen but very unlikely. Middlesbrough and Brighton can't finish level on points. Middlesbrough and Burnley can but Burnley would go up on the head to head rule. Brighton and Burnley drew both their games so on head to head they are level. Burnley are ahead on goal difference (33 to 30), Brighton on goals (70 to 68). For Brighton's goal difference to improve they have to win at least one of their remaining games. If that is against Middlesbrough then Brighton would go above them and be promoted. If Brighton win the other game and draw with Middlesbrough, again, they would be above them and promoted. So the only combination of results that works is Brighton win their other game and lose to Middlesbrough. They have to win by 3 more goals than they lose the other game by. Lets say they win 4-0 and lose 1-0, improving their goal difference to 33 and giving them 74 goals. That means that Burnley would also need to win one game and lose one. They would have to score 6 goals to make them equal to Brighton and concede 8 to get the goal differences equal.
......And if Burnley get a point deducted because their manager sounds too much like a Dalek????? I don't think you've thought this through have you?
Boro and Brighton will finish level on points if they Brighton draw today and they draw with each other next week
