If Steve Bruce's Hull City win at Burnley tonight, they will go into 2nd place in the Championship and give themselves a very good chance of making it into the play-offs at the very least.
Conversely, if Sunderland fail to beat Norwich at the Stadium of ****e on Sunday, they could find themselves a mere 3 points above the relegation zone with their following 4 games being against Man Utd, Chelsea, us in the derby, and Everton. By the time they face Aston Villa at Villa Park, they could realistically be in the bottom 3-4 with just 4 games left.
MON has never had to battle against relegation, and it is certainly a different type of pressure than fighting to win a two horse race in Scotland. After hearing him rambling and mumbling his way through post match interviews I am not sure that he has the character to turn things around. Plus he does not have John Robertson who I believe was the real brains behind MON's previous success, so Sunday is a massive game for Les Miserables.
If Sunderland were to be relegated and miss out on the new bumper sky deal it could take them years to recover, and as we have seen with Wolves, it is by no means guaranteed that they will bounce straight back into the Premier League. Steve Bruce, on the other hand could leapfrog the club who sacked him and the fans who never really got past his Geordie roots, and take their place in the top tier of English football.
So, for the second consecutive year we could be saying "Well done Agent Bruce"
It's a funny old game!
