Disappointed, not surprised by today , but not despondent.

I think we will be a totally different proposition the further we go into September and October.

It was always going to be a learning curve for SJ and his assistants. The break is now a great chance for them to reflect on the past couple of months. They'll be stronger for it.

We'll hopefully have Crooks, Ajayi and Famewo back. Alphabet will be available. I also think Williams will have a role to play as the season goes on. He needed time to get settled in and back up to speed. He has to have real quality that we will surely see as the season goes on.

Then there's Belloumi who is looking very good from the brief cameos who will be a lot nearer normal in a couple of weeks time. And Millar will be eased back in too. Then Matazo later on.

There could well be an incoming surprise still to come, as I think 1 or 2 more will go out on loan before the window closes (as well as Laalaoui hopefully).

SJ could have some nice selection problems heading his way.

Don't share your confidence about having Ajayi and Famewo available - IF they make half a season's worth of appearances between them I will be pleasantly surprised. I really hope they do because we've looked shaky to say the least without Ajayi back there

Agree with most of this.

I'm surprised Williams hasn't had more minutes yet, especially in a game like today when the games gone at 4-1.

I just hope we keep Hughes and Ajayi or Famewo can get fit and stay fit. Otherwise...

I agree, not sure why Williams hasn’t had more time, but I guess it’s just fitness.

Yeah I’m hoping he can provide that missing link because Lundstram on his own just gets phased out the game by the opposition and we have no alternative

Tbf, Lundstram cannot run the midfield by himself. When Crooks was playing, he was much better. I’m pretty sure this new guy Amir will make a decent pairing with him.

He was injured last year and playing with a foot injury-this season he is a class act -quicker in the run-devastating free kicks and looks much fitter-key player for us.
Still a diving cheating little twat. I doing think I’ve ever been so embarrassed watching a one of our own players as that flopping fish.

The midfield aside, I don't think it was that bad of a performance, I've certainly seen worse. Bristol have a very settled side that they've built over a number of seasons - they are where I'd like us to be in a couple of season's time.

Positives:

  • Belloumi looked very good, bit rusty but overall given the amount of time he's been out, it can be forgiven. Good play to help set up the Joseph goal.
  • Joseph got his first goal - was unlucky to find Vitek in good form, but he's going to be in the Man U first team before long so it was always gonna be difficult.
  • Akintola surprised me today, he looked a bit lost in the last few games but he shone today, seemed to work well with Ndala on the other flank.
  • We played some decent stuff against an in form side and it was particularly pleasing to see us punish a mistake from the opposition. In previous seasons that would have been worked back to the defence.

Bad ****:

  • Mistakes cost us today, no question. Hughes dossing about for one of them, nobody picking up Riis in the middle for the first and similarly the fourth was an easy finish because we didn't go man for man.
  • We need a six, that's for sure, so hopefully this Bosnian lad is going to allow Lundstram and Palmer/Slater/Matazo/Crooks to take up the box to box roles. Crooks being out seems to have derailed the midfield a bit and we've lost some height at set pieces.
  • We've now conceded 12 goals in 4 games against Bristol, Oxford, Wrexham and Blackburn. Those aren't top Championship sides, we need to improve sharpish. Hughes had an off day, as did Drameh and Pandur, but when your better players aren't at it, it leaves us vulnerable and Egan was often left scrambling to recover.
  • Our midfield over commits big time. With Crooks in the side, you can have that extra man forward because he forces the others to stay back. Without him, it looked like both Slater and Lundstram were pushing on and leaving a huge gap around the centre circle area. Their midfielders were strolling through.
  • Zonal marking doesn't work in the Championship. There, I said it. You need to go man to man when you haven't got pace in your defence and we definitely don't.
D+ from me for this game today. Get the Bosnian guy in, show Hughes footage of Michael Turner against Arsenal, don't sell Pandur.
You seem to gloss over the 12 goals conceded in 4 games as mere ‘mistakes’. I’d suggest that there’s a structural issue with the midfield and defence that goes beyond that.

I didn't gloss over it, sorry if it came across that way but I did say that it was against "mid" teams and that against the likes of Southampton and Leicester we'll be done in very quickly.

Today's goals were almost all preventable from our point of view, they were down to individual errors from single players. But even putting that to one side, the gap in midfield is the biggest issue and we need to be better at looking after the ball. We can't rely on Hughes/Egan to pull off heroic slide tackles every five minutes because our midfield is piss weak.

And also, I should have added, I was stunned at how many second balls we lost out to. Ball goes into the air, most of the time it goes anywhere but it was almost always an opposition player that got to it first. Same against Blackburn. That also needs to improve quickly.
