I'm sure there are plenty of those, but I return to the premise that what is apparently true of Reading is probably also true of Saints to a greater or lesser extent. In fact, it is probably true of every football club to a certain degree, that isn't doing as well as they could be, at present, for example, they are not in the top division; that live in the shadow of football clubs up the road who are doing spectacularly better, that aren't mentioned every 30 seconds or less by the sports media.

Less seriously, in order to buck that trend, there are a few strict rules that apply. 1. You have to be in the top 6, possibly even the top 4 to be maxing out your support. 2. You have to be mentioned by the sports media frequently, even if is utter trivia. 3. It helps if you're called Arsenal or Manchester United, or maybe Liverpool, although that last name is fading from memory.

Now tell me I'm not speaking the truth..? ;)

You talk a fair game - however it is true to Reading to a far, far greater extent than Southampton.

OK, I'll accept that. I still think they are a club of substance though, and they'll be a good addition to the PL, if only to shake the tree a little. Perhaps the plastic fans you mention will manage to Google the route to their own stadium, next August..?
Besides, what really bores the living daylights out of me is the same clubs being successful year after year until someone mentions that they have some apparent le god given right to be where they are. Hopefully Saints will accompany Reading in messing up the plans of the so-called glamour clubs who, let's face it, probably have the largest proportion of long standing plastic fans of the entire UK.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the debate between Jake and SecondStain, both having made good arguments. However I find myself in agreement far more with SecondStain, especially his appreciation of what Reading have achieved.

Jake, I did go to Rochdale and sadly saw Saints lose, in a neat little stadium offering a super view of the game, and enjoyed talking with very friendly and sporting home fans.
