Totally agree that many of the other owners (including my own team's) would have signed up given the chance, but I would genuinely feel the same if they did. And yes, there would be financial pain and lots of it. But the alternative is to roll over and let it happen, and once they do that then there will be another change where they keep even more of the money, and repeat and repeat. The domestic game would eventually recover without them if they stand up to them, though maybe not awash with so much money. It might even be fairer and more enjoyable. The alternative will kill off the rest anyway in time, leaving us with a franchise system of a handful of clubs across Europe.
Mate, i have not seen one single supporter of any of the "invited" teams that is happy with this. The whole idea is loathsome and it's time supporters made their feelings known to the money grabbers.

Oh agree that they should do it, just that they won’t. It’s essentially getting business owners to vote to completely **** themselves financially. It won’t happen

Sadly I agree with you.

And if that does happen then for thousands of fans, certainly those of my age and older, football will have died and will never be the same again.

They’ve basically said that the millions of fans globally are more important than the 100k (from each club) or whatever fans who go to games regularly.

Im sure that fans in the Far East and India are buzzing at the idea of seeing Barca v Man City every week.

It’s just whether or not their are more ramifications than this just effectively replacing the Champs League. Fixture congestion being the obvious one, the group stage will be 18 midweek games. That is going to **** up the domestic schedule completely
how many fans will arsenal have globally when they have a run of 10 years in last place?

I agree. I have never seen an issue unite fans as much as this one. And to be fair to them, those shouting loudest against it have been from the ranks of the clubs involved rather than those who missed out.

The champions league will still be a thing in the proposal atm. If the German teams and PSG don’t sign up to this league then they will still want to play in the UEFA version you would assume. How qualifying would work with 5 teams being invited to Supah League each season I don’t know but there should still be a way other teams can play in European competition.

They still will be in the domestic league and cups with the current proposal. They seem to have quite a few despite finishing 6th or whatever the last 5 years.

That's because there is absolutely no football reason for it, the only thing they are looking at is gaining more money from mid-week games when the players should be resting.

That's the elephant in the room though. FIFA and UEFA have been so vocal today that any team or players taking part in this competition would be banned from any other world football, that to climb down would be a massive loss of face and potentially be enough to destroy both organisations. If they don't back down then those breakaway teams won't be involved in the champions league (or any other tournament) and no invited clubs could accept the invite without facing the same fate.

At the same time, the breakaway clubs must be confident that this won't happen to still go ahead with the announcement. At least one side is calling the other's bluff. The side that backs down will face obscurity and be destroyed - in the long term if not the short term.

Well yeah so it could be like in other sports (darts maybe?) where there are two bodies for European competition essentially. The current champs league format with PSG/Bayern/Dortmund/Napoli etc type teams and this new one with these founding teams. The teams can’t cross over and play each other in European competition (though if this were to happen how long until there was some winners of new league v winners of champs league type game?)

I really hope the governing bodies don't back down from this.

It would go beyond that though according to what was said today with players banned from international football and tournaments, and possibly not allowed to come back once they cross over. It could end up like the scenario you mention, or it could end up like Rugby Union and Rugby League. If it becomes more Americanised, how long until the format changes to become more TV friendly, more 'exciting', and no tied results, etc? We could end up with two codes of football in a worst case scenario.

I guess this depends on who has the biggest balls. the various associations could seriously **** the owners over. If they kick them out, what wopuld the situation of the player contracts be? Clubs have acted in a way that has caused a restraint of trade and would probably make all the player contracts null and void, so they could leave on a free and leave the owners with an increasing mountain of debt with no way to recoup it.
I would ****ing love that.

If I was calling the shots I’d say **** off and concentrate on dominating the domestic scene since but Levy is no football man no matter how much he chills out with the players in the canteen.

Yeah, UEFA used the word “could” be banned from competitions not “are” so I think they would back down. The clubs might be banned if this goes ahead but if a player moved from say PSG to Man City then I’d expect them to be able to play in the European competitions.

Dunno about internationally and how much the players would care especially if they had to take a huge pay cut to be at a club not involved to play for their country. Would be an individual thing
