Hull City boss Steve Bruce targets ex-Aston Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan


HULL City boss Steve Bruce has lined up former Tigers loan star Brad Guzan to solve his goalkeeping problems at the KC Stadium this summer.

Bruce has made recruiting a new keeper the top priority ahead of pre-season training next month and is understood to have installed Guzan high on his wish-list.

The 27-year-old is a free agent following his release from Aston Villa last month and served City with distinction during a three-month loan spell with the club in the 2010-11 season.

A permanent return to East Yorkshire could now be on the cards for the keeper after Bruce missed out on another possible target, Tomasz Kuszczak.

The former Manchester United goalkeeper opted to join Championship rivals Brighton yesterday, despite the Tigers declaring a keen interest in the free agent over the last seven days.

City are now likely to switch all their attention to Guzan as he eyes up a club that can offer regular first-team football after four largely frustrating years as an understudy at Villa Park.

Ipswich Town, who were also in the running for Kuszczak, appear to be the most likely stumbling block for the transfer, but Guzan may favour the Tigers after enjoying a previous stint at the KC during Nigel Pearson's reign.

Sixteen appearances for City between January and April 2011 continues to represent Guzan's longest sequence as a first-choice goalkeeper before the terms of his emergency loan eventually curtailed his short time with the Tigers.

Another factor in the deal is the fact Bruce is also familiar with Guzan. The City boss was in charge of Sunderland when the Illinois-born keeper saved four penalties in one League Cup tie as Aston Villa won at the Stadium of Light in October 2009.

For now, the goalkeeper is currently mulling over his options after an extended season on international duty with the USA side.

He was part of the US squad that faced Scotland, Brazil and Canada in the end-of-season friendlies before being an unused substitute in the World Cup qualifiers against Antigua and Barbuda and Guatemala last week, serving as back-up to Everton keeper Tim Howard.

City's need for a new goalkeeper is clear after the exit of all three figures who featured between the sticks during 2011-12.

Vito Mannone had been Nick Barmby's first-choice transfer target before his sacking, and while the Italian is still open to a City move, Arsenal's £1m asking price has always looked capable of jeopardising interest.

Veteran Adriano Basso will formally leave the KC upon the expiry of his one-year deal next week, while Peter Gulacsi returned to his parent club Liverpool in March.

That leaves City without a recognised number one on the books and triggered speculation of moves for both Craig Gordon and former Hull City stopper Boaz Myhill.

Ex-Sunderland keeper Gordon is not thought to be in Bruce's plans as he hopes to land a top-flight club for his services, while no contact has been made for Myhill.

A veteran of three promotions with the Tigers during his time at the KC Stadium, Myhill will assess his future when returning to pre-season training at West Brom under new boss Steve Clarke.

In our loan spell with us he was fairly dependable without being outstanding, he had his negative points from memory he was a little flappy with crosses etc. I'm sure many of us would prefer Mannone. However he seemed a fairly decent shot stopper and was vocal, he also had a spell as Villas number one when Given was injured and seemed to cope with the Prem fine. I'm not exactly ecstatic if we got him, but I wouldn't be devestated.

However if we do get him it brings up a couple of questions, everyone thought money would be available because of the Allams bringing in Bruce. Well does A) Bruce not rate Mannone or B) He's choosing a bosman keeper because he'd rather spend the money available on outfield positions, which infers that there is a set budget even though the Allams said it was on a case by case basis.

Even teams with money sign players on free transfers if the manager deems them good enough for the team. I would be fine with having Guzan as our keeper but I would prefer Mannone, however if the money saved from getting Guzan leads to the signing of a good quality outfield player then i'm all for it.

Yup Mannone hates not been involved at Arsenal and enjoyed his time with us because he was playing, equally Guzan hated being a bench warmer at Villa. I can't see both coming. He'll bring in someone whos willing to challenge for the first team but not expecting to start every game.
 
Theres a misconseption that bosman's are cheaper alternate then transfers, they're not. I remember Sol Campbell going from Spurs to Arsenal. Arsenal paid him a signing on fee of about £12m. The difference is the player gets the money that a club would get if he wasn't out of contract.

The capacity for frugality is always admirable in anyone in a managerial capacity - any spending always has to be justified whether there is a set budget or not.

Going for Guzan rather than Mannone need not in anyway suggest there is a set budget. I may be wrong but in any case I seem to remember opinion on here previously being divided on who was the better keeper two.

Two fine examples of bollocks there. How can we miss out on a possible target? Possible target means he's a keeper who was known to be free and nothing more, that doesn't make him a target of Bruce's. If that is the criteria for missing out on a player then I suspect there'll be a whole lot more we 'miss out on' as the summer continues. The second bit basically says Bruce knows Guzan well because he once managed a team playing against him.

isn't it? remembering those hazy days.. when we "missed out" on the likes of Owen, Zamora, Negredo, Vieri & wait for it... Daryl Murphy! Daryl who? exactly..
 
Thought guzan had a few "moments" in goal, as did Mannone to the back end of last season, every manager has there own opinions on players, Bruce may just rate Guzan that bit higher. Like alot say not an outstanding signing but a pretty solid one.

That would be the player that asked for so much money that Duffen wouldn't sanction the contract.
 
As every GK we have been linked with already sign for clubs elsewhere,, City get closer to getting Vito back. imo

I will be very surprised if keeper coach Gary Walsh does not have an input into who the 2 keepers are.
