I think it would be wrong to claim Ali got knocked out. Have a read of this:

"Younger, stronger, and in his prime, the 31 year old Larry Holmes (35-0), the WBC Heavyweight Champion, was matched up against an old, shopwarn Muhammad Ali (56-4) who was likely in the early stages of Parkinson's Disease, a disorder of the brain that slows one's reflexes and eventually leads to shaking (tremors) and difficulty with walking, movement, and coordination.

Unbeknownst to many, three months before the fight, Ali was ordered by the Nevada Athletic Commission to visit the Mayo Clinic for a neurological exam. The results exam were not made public at the time but contained the following results (source:BoxRec):

  • Muhammad Ali was a little off when he tried to touch his finger to his nose.
  • He had trouble coordinating his speech, and
  • The fight legend couldn't hop on one foot well.
Despite the poor results, Nevada approved the fight with Holmes.

In an absolutely disgusting bout, the 31 year old champion dismantled the 38 year old legend in 10 rounds of a scheduled 15 round bout. There were no knockdowns, but Holmes dominated the fight and was given every round by all three judges. Finally, Ali's corner stopped the fight after the tenth round.

The TKO marked the first and only time Ali was stopped inside the distance in his 61 fight pro career".

Very sad fight to watch, but Ali wasn't exactly the nicest bloke in the world so some would say it was Karma if you believe in that sort of ****!

Haye looks great against paper records and smaller heavyweights.

The minute people throw back at him he ****s it because he hasn't got the chin. Haye has the power and speed to be a good heavy but he absolutely **** himself against a Klitschko jab and ran for 12 rounds. Against Joshua he'd have to throw leather early and catch Ant without being hit back- it's possible but risky.

But that's the heavyweight division. All the greats were knocked out once.

Irrespective of what you say, i can guarantee Haye is the last man the world championship holders will want to face.

Haye is certainly a clever boxer. He's fast on his feet, has fast hands and can bomb. But has has a lot against him. Against Fury he gives up 7 inches in reach and about a stone and a half in weight, he also 8 years older. And he's about 6 inches shorter.

Against Joshua, he's 3 inches shorter, but has to give up a stone and a half as well. He's 4 inches shorter in reach, and 9 years older.

Wilder is closer to him in weight, there's only a few pounds in it. But he gives up 5 inches in reach, 4 inches in height and has to give 5 years in age.

He's probably as skilled as anyone, but the numbers show that he has his work cut out for him.

That the same Haye embarrassed the nation against Klitschko, yeah?! Only half jesting, he is a skilled boxer, awesome speed and power for his size, but he's hardly giving the big boys sleepless nights after beating jokes like last night is he?

Haye couldn't work out how to beat Klitschko so how he would work out how to beat Fury I'm not sure. However, Fury has vowed never to fight Haye

But then again Haye did beat the biggest heavyweight in the history of the sport

Possibly the slowest boxer of all time!

I wouldn't rule Haye out, I'm a fan. He's always been explosive and exciting to watch but isn't he just lining up a pile of tin cans to knock over enroute to try and get a huge payday with AJ, where I'd expect AJ to knock him out? That's what I think Hayes is after, that one last massive payday in an all British showdown.

Briggs actually looked in awesome physical shape last night for a 44 year old but it's going to be lights out for him trying to avoid Hayes speed. Another easy night for Haye.

In my opinion it Haye and AJ fought next week Haye would win but give it a year to 18 months once AJ has gained some experience then I'd fancy AJ to get the job done. I think Haye knows this and I think Eddie Hearn knows this.

Well we've been up to our ears in heavyweight activity of late, so it's time for the hands of lightning to take centre stage for a change. Tomorrow in Beijing, the IBF World Flyweight Champion Amnat Ruenroeng steps into the ring for the sixth defence of his belt. The man rated the second best fighter in his class by some, behind the wonderful Roman Gonzalez, again takes on the man he beat in one of the dirtiest fights in years, the ex IBF Light Flyweight Champion John Riel Casimero. After taking up boxing while incarcerated for robbery, the Thai sensation Ruenroeng won a national amateur title while still behind bars. Amazingly enough, he was then released the following day. A year later he found himself at the 2008 Olympics in China. Fours years on, at the ripe old age of 33, he made his professional debut in 2012. A year and a half and 12 fights later, he beat Rocky Fuentes for the vacant IBF World Flyweight Title. In his 17 fights to date, he's only stopped five, but he's extremely clever and is hard to tag. He's undefeated and has probably the best reach in the division. For his size, he's as strong as buggery and doesn't think twice when it comes to a wrestling like take down. Last time these two met, Casimero was flung onto the canvas at least half a dozen times, so he should know by now what to expect. Latest betting sees Ruenroeng about 2-5 while Casimero is a 7-4 chance. It should be a cracking fight. The big hope is that Gonzalez and Ruenroeng can get it together.

The weigh in for the above fight took on a farcical turn when both fighters failed to make the 112 pound weight for the bout. Ruenroeng tipped the scales at 117.34 at the first attempt and 116.1 at the second. Casimero's numbers were 113.32 and 113.10. At this point, Ruenroeng lost his belt due to not making the weight. Then it seems that pressure from promoters may have forced the issue. IBF spokesperson Jeanette Salazar said that the weigh in had been a dummy run and that both men had later made the weight back at the hotel. The media were not informed of the impending weigh in at the hotel, so it went without coverage. Make of it what you will.

Well another one bites the dust. The former IBF Light Flyweight Champion John Riel Casimero is now the new IBF Flyweight Champion of the World after putting down Amnat Ruenroeng twice in the fourth round. It really wasn't too much of a fight though, with both boxers looks lethargic for most of the match. Both had trouble with their timing. Ruenroeng started the first round with some aggression but it lasted less than half a round, from that point on, he fought on the back foot. This suited Casimero. It allowed him to dictate the pace, as slow as it was. Neither man threw too much, and when they did, most of it flew west. I don't know what the cards read after three, but it could have easily gone either way. I thought maybe two rounds to the champ and one to the challenger. Ruenroeng scored two throw down though, and managed another in the fourth. A bit shy of the 10 or so in their first fight. The near end came when Casimero sent the champ to the floor with a thunderous, counter left. Rueonroeng looked as though he might not beat the count, but did so at eight. Casimero chased him down and sank him with a wicked left hook to the side of his body. It hurt bad. At that point it became obvious that Ruenroeng was one ****ed ex-champion. Casimero's camp has called out Roman Gonzalez. After watching Casimero's win, I'd be looking for a few easy pay checks before looking to butt heads with Chocolatito.

The wonderful Donnie Nietes had another big win yesterday when the Mexican Raul Garcia failed to come out for the sixth round of their WBO World Light Flyweight bout in the Philippines. The two division champion had little trouble in defending his title for the ninth time in four years. Once Nietes found that the hard punching Garcia was no match for him, the champ began to pour it on. He dropped the challenger three times in the third, and belted him through the fourth and fifth, forcing the Mexican to call it quits when the bell rang for the sixth. The veteran champ took his unbeaten title fight run to 15 from 15. Nietes now has a return clash with former WBO World Minimumweight Champion Moises Fuentes, a man who he has twice fought in the past. (Well he couldn't have fought him in the future could he?) <laugh> The first time they met was in March 2013 when Nietes kept his title by majority draw. Nietes took no prisoners in their second bout, stopping the challenger in the ninth in May 2014. The upcoming fight is to take place in California on September 29. An interesting sidelight to Donnie Nietes, is that he's the longest reigning champion in the rich history of Philippine boxing. It's said that he might in the not too distant future, move up to flyweight, a territory dominated by one Roman Gonzalez.

Lee McGregor won the British bantamweight title in Dunfermline last night beating Joshua John (Wales) unanimous. Only 19 stepped up to snr ranks this year. Amazing. He can add this to his Scottish and British flyweight youth titles.
