He used to do the ice hockey. I like ice hockey. He also did the swimming at the Olympics in '72 including Mark Spitz. I like Mark Spitz. He did the ice dancing. That is all.
I remember Alan Weeks. He was around in the era of David Coleman, David Vine and not forgetting Kinky Frank Bough.
Used to watch the Harringay Racers Ice Hockey,then the Wembley Lions after the Racers ceased.Still have the programmes too...to keep my old Spurs programmes company!
Stopping up to watch Sportsnight with Harry "Know What I Mean 'Arry" Carpenter is an abiding memory of childhood. It was a treat to watch sport you would otherwise miss and could only catch up with by scouring with the papers for the results (if they'd been printed before they went to press).
I only saw one speedway "match" at Harringay but I remember the names. Vic Duggan and his brother Ray from Australia. Poor Ray was killed racing one night. Well,it could be dangerous as you may remember.
I remember watching highlights of spurs playing United in an Fa Cup replay in 1979 or 1980 on sports night on BBC 1. The spurs keeper (Mila Aleksic...sadly deceased a couple of years ago) got kicked in the mouth and had to go off so Glenn Hoddle went in goal and Ossie Ardilles got us a last minute winner.
Harry Carpenter was a great guy, a true professional and so passionate about boxing. They used to feature amateur boxing on "Sportsnight with Coleman" which was great entertainment for midweek.
Bert Harkins was the star of the Wembley Speedway team but I loved the world championships most - Ivan Mauger, Ole Olsen and Peter Collins of the Belle Vue Aces [one for Luke]. He became a British world champion in Poland in '76.
Yeah, Peter Collins was the superstar of speedway's golden era here. I'm a little too young to remember his heyday, but I do recall the old stadium at Belle Vue which gave me an interest in both speedway and dog racing - much like Walthamstow would have done for many here.
I kind of felt sorry for him, he wasn't doing anything illegal (apart from the coke) like with kids or assaulting women or anything. He was just doing what turned him on. It takes all types. If we are going to penalise people for taking coke then they should drug test MP's (that's members of parliament, not Poch). He lost his job and everything that goes with it for having a bit of adult fun. It's not my cup of tea but everyone to their own. I still use his name as rhyming slang when I want to tell someone to go forth and multiply.
It all boils down to the embarrassment that a persons' sexual inclinations, when revealed to the public, cause the person themselves / their employer etc. However embarrassment is not a crime, nor is it to the detriment of society (as fraud / narcotics use / nonces are) .
I saw this on NewsNow, it's from the TalkSport website.......unless I'm immensely pissed and this is some weird dream..... A man wearing a penguin costume and his father were assaulted on a train to Chelmsford, in a row which appears to have been sparked by football. Officers have released CCTV images in connection with the assault and affray, and are appealing for information about those caught on film. The incident happened between 11.50pm and 12.25am on 21 December, on board the Liverpool Street to Chelmsford service. A group of around six men were sitting near the train toilet and one of them asked another passenger, a 19-year-old man who was waiting outside the toilet, if he supported Tottenham Hotspur. The passenger, who was dressed in a fancy dress penguin costume, used the toilet and when he came out, he found the group of men blocking his route back to his seat and being aggressive towards him. The victim’s father, a 56-year-old man, approached the group and tried to pull the victim away, at which point they were both assaulted by the group, who punched and kicked the father and son. The disorder spilled out on to the platform at Chelmsford station. Another member of the public attended to intervene and was also assaulted, sustaining a black eye. The original two victims sustained multiple cuts and bruises to their faces and bodies.
