I take it this is the place where we discuss things totally irrelevant to football?

Anyhow, 15 years for Philpott, 17 years for the "mate" and wife of which they'll serve half.

2.5 years for each child, not sure what's worse the crime itself or the sentencing handed out? Nick a gingerbread man or lick a stolen Ice cream though and your in real trouble.

Philpott got a life sentence with a minimum of 15 years. I wouldn't be too optimistic of seeing freedom again if I was him because as sure as night follows day, someone will carve him up whilst he's locked away.

Apparantly when he was sentenced, he smiled and made "an obscene hand gesture".

    Words fail me.

The judge sentenced them all on the basis that they were as culpable as if they had murdered the children.

It's a stunningly sympathetic sentence for them. The idea behind it, that setting their house on fire with the intention of then saving the children is not murder, is hugely flawed. Unless they were mentally incapable of appreciating what they were doing, which they weren't, then it's such extreme negligence that to call it anything other than murder is an insult to the 6 young lives lost at the hands of their parents and accomplice.

Did she?! I hadn't read the sentencing but how can it be that sentencing 3 people for 6 murders can bring such pitiful sentences? 2 being allowed out well under 10 years with good behaviour would be an insult for a single murder let alone 6.

In my book and i suspect most of the public it's Murder, why do we have so inept Judges, who are completly out of touch?

  12. The thought of those sentences is making me too angry to comment - so to change the subject to another 'non-footballing' one - the delightful Joey Barton is in the news again....

How that 2nd rate thuggish piece of self-publicity seeking excrement can consider commenting on one of the best defenders in the world is beyond me...... How I hope PSG follow through with the threat of legal action.

...and more people bang on about him being an example of the ills of Labour's benefits system than consider the fact he's a multiple murderer who planned on using the money that people donated for the funeral of his children to live a lavish lifestyle. That's got nothing to do with Gordon Brown, and everything to do with the McCanns proving you can kill your children, lie about it, and be rewarded handsomely as a result (see also: Karen Matthews)

    Sickly sentencing, but understandable.

If they'd been tried for murder, it would have only taken a slight bit of doubt to get them off. Manslaughter had the highest chance of conviction and that's what the CPS went with.

I don't believe they meant to kill their children. But at the same time, it's extremely stupid to think a house fire wouldn't kill... I do the fire safety stuff at work. I know, because of my training, that it only takes 3 minutes from seeing a flame to death by smoke inhalation - most people don't.

Did anyone see those two 20-something blokes on the TV last night? I think they were neighbours. They were upset because they couldn't do anything at the time. That upset me too. The children are gone, never to return, but everyone else around has to deal with this forever.

Philpott is going to have a tough time in gaol. Over 5,000 days of boredom and fear will bend his mind to a few dark places. Good.

What a tosser. You've got Beckham representing English football well over there, contributing his wages to charities in Paris whilst that pseudo-intellectual throws around childish insults after starting arguments with everyone he can. Oh well he'll find himself working in the Championship at best next season.

Does anybody think that the justice system in this country is fit for purpose any more? I can't remember the last time that I heard a judgement or sentence that I agreed with.

The McCanns haven't been arrested, let alone sentenced, and you can bet their PR and lawyers aren't working pro bono.

As for Mick Philpott's sentence, it does make sense when you read the judge's remarks. The plan was to frame a former mistress in order to get full access to his kids - which, given he'd be the "hero" who saved his children from the fire no judge would have ruled otherwise. From that standpoint Mick Philpott isn't a murderer in the legal definition of the word, as to be guilty of murder he would need to have shown malice or intent to kill his children which he didn't - so if they wanted a murder conviction, there were enough loopholes to get a reduced sentence (which is why his history of violence and controlling behaviour towards women was kept hushed-up until the summing-up, as if that had been reported his defence would've had another loophole to get the case thrown out)

Raising funds to pay lawyers isn't being "rewarded handsomely" and their "PR" is the people that are looking for their daughter. As a father I would do exactly the same. I'm not convinced they did any more than take their eyes off their kids for longer than they should have. I wouldn't rule out them being guilty, but I would need to be sure before I called them murderers, personally. As you say, they haven't been arrested. If they killed her in a flash of temper, they've covered it up very well.

That's because the media are only interested in the controversal judgments PNP. You don't hear about the thousands of decisions made every week. Of all the establishment institutions the Judges are easily the best IMO. We would be in a far worse state without them protecting us from politiciians and ourselves.
